Removal of Cervix

Hi All! I am having a LAVH on the 26th and a friend is having one on Monday. My friend said that her Dr. is removing her cervix. My Dr. is not removing mine. Is there a benefit to having or not having a cervix?

Re: Removal of Cervix

i kept my cervix and i'm very glad i did. i dont know if theres a benefit to it or not, i didnt want anything healthy removed and felt better mentally keeping it. theres lots of info online if you google cervix removal and phrases similar to that. you can read articles that say there are benefits but you can also read just as many that say there isnt. its a personal preference really. one thing i would suggest is to double check with your surgeon that he is not removing your cervix. with vaginal hysterectomies, the cervix is removed..its very rare that its retained during a vh. sometimes dr's dont mention that the cervix is being removed and it surprises some people. good luck with your decision!

Re: Removal of Cervix

You are scheduled for the same surgery I had. The LAVH is a Laparoscopic Assisted Vaginal Hysterectomy. That means the work is done via the small incisions in the abdomen and then the complete uterus (with cervix) is delivered vaginally. You can read more here: https://www.hystersisters.com/vb2/vie...sterectomy.htm.

If you are wanting to retain your cervix, do talk to your doctor soon!

As ((dressedupinblue)) mentioned, you can find information that states there are benefits to retaining your cervix and you can also find information stating that there are no benefits to retaining the cervix! Thus, it can be a very individual decision!

In my case, my cervix was also affected by my endometriosis so it had to be removed. The cervix is not a separate organ but rather the neck of the uterus.

I have had no issues from not having a cervix. I didn't notice it when I had it and don't notice now that it is gone!
