I am new to this forum. I am scheduled to have a TVH on December 16. This is something I have put off, not sure it is necessary. The reason for the surgery is an enlarged uterus, my first ultrasound it measured 12.3 x5.0x6.8 cm, I had an ablation which stopped some of the bleeding, but not all still had period every month. Had another ultrasound last april and the size was 10.5x4.8x6.5 cm, this time Dr said hysterectomy was the only procedure to stop the pain. I do have left sided pain, pressure on my bladder which can be painful, and sex can be painful. The reason the doctor gave for the surgery was fibroids, the results of the ultrasound was heterogeneous uterus likely due to diffuse fibroid changes. The reason I ask for opinions is that my cycle has become irregular and I think I am close to menopause, my FSH was 17.5, so I had heard that takes care of the problem. Also he wants to take my ovaries because I have estrogen negative non invasive breast cancer 5 years ago, and my mom may have had ovrain cancer. Also I have been reading that if you had a c section you might not be able to have a vaginal hysterectomy. Any advice would be helpful.

You're very wise to start asking questions since a hysterectomy is a big decision, and major surgery, which should only be considered as a last resort after all other options have been exhausted.
