Blood clot, um... is this okay???

I am 16 days post op. I never had any bleeding or spotting immediately after surgery. Then day 9 I began bleeding lightly. Today was the fisrt day that I had finished the light bleeding. Then out of the blue it is 2:30 in the morning, I get out of bed to use the bathroom and right away I noticed bright red blood. First it was just dripping into the toilet and then I passed a blood clot about the size of a quarter. Is this normal, okay, or something I should be alarmed about? Has this happened to anyone else??

Re: Blood clot, um... is this okay???

I think I would contact my doctor just to let them know what is happening. It is probably nothing but the fact that the color changed might be the sign of a possible problem. I am sure that they told you if it becomes heavier-I think a pad an hour is the rule-to go to ER immediately. I might call the on call doc to run it by him/her. Most of the time it is nothing major. I would try to lie down and elevate your legs. Just to get pressure off.

Re: Blood clot, um... is this okay???

Similar to my experience! I ended up having to lay down for a day and rest and then it tapered off. My doc said the bleeding is a bit unusual (*) but not unheard of, and the clots go right along with it.

I did put the (*) caveat there - "unless you've done something to tear your cuff" - usually sex but unusual physical activity could, I suppose, do that (I've gotten away with running dancing and carrying boxes - but everyone's different - so if you've gone horseback riding or dragon-slaying or bungee-jumping or the like, or if you've had anything "inside", you might want to get yourself checked out.

The "rule" is a pad an hour, but I would add that if the bleeding like that lasts more than a day or two, call the doc just to be sure. I was pretty concerned about what was going on and my doc was happy to alleviate the fear.

LOL! Thanks! I think I will let them know just to be on the safe side. I am scheduled for an ultrasound in a few weeks so I am sure that he would move it up if he thought it was anything to worry about.
