PPIs prior to surgery

I got over an episode of gastritis in January this year and it flared back up last weekend. I'm in so much pain. Anyway My gastroenterologist wants me back on Prevacid for 3 months to help with pain and healing. Called my oncologist office to confirm I could start this medication and it's ok with my upcoming surgery in 2 weeks. They said it was fine. Anyone else have to take PPIs Long term or even before and after surgery? I'm overly cautious taking medications with such a big surgery coming up. Thanks

Re: PPIs prior to surgery

I take them, and my anesthesiologist especially wanted me to be sure to take it. Surely if someone could, per their GI Dr, stop them, it would be good, but I have multiple stomach issues and need to stay on mine. Like all meds, it depends on the individual situation. Be sure you take it pre op if those are your instructions, ask specifically at your pre op visit.

PPIs prior to surgery

As Greyown said, it should be okay, as long as it's approved by your surgeon. When you have your pre-op appointment, I would also recommend asking your surgeon what he'll be prescribing for post-op pain relief. If he's considering an NSAID like ibuprofen or naproxen, that could aggravate your reflux issues, so you'll need to be careful, as well as checking for any other potential interactions with your PPI. Best wishes for a successful surgery and a smooth recovery!

PPIs prior to surgery

I had been on a PPI for 8 years before my surgery and I was still on it the day I went in. I didn't take it the morning of as i didn't feel I'd need it. But it's safe. It doesn't thin the blood. Why they tell you to stay off certain vitamins and Advil. All it does is **** down acid pumps in your stomach. It will be fine and once you wake up they will give you all the tummy meds you need. The big no no meds are ones that thin blood. Increases risk of losing too much blood during surgery.
