25 years old. Leave or take ovaries!!!!! HELP!Struggle with PCOS and pain

So I am 25 and I'm having a hysterectomy on August 4th and at first I wanted to leave my ovaries but I struggle with PCOS and hurt half the time. Just wondering if I would benefit from having them removed! Yes I know I'm young to go through menopause but honestly my hormones r so wacky now anyway and my ovaries don't work like they should as far as ovulating every month bc I don't have periods for 6 months or longer. Just need some advice but I know ultimately it's my decision. Also my doctor said a long time ago having PCOS I'm at a higher risk for diabetes etc so I'm wondering if I would benefit to having them out! Ugh just frustrating

Hi Hgwhitt -

I am so sorry you are struggling with all of this.

Having this surgery for PCOS may not help. Here is an article that discusses PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome/Disorder).

And you are very young to be having a hysterectomy and oopherectomy (removal of ovaries). Have you gotten other opinions on your options? Have you seen a PCOS specialist?

You need to make the right decision for you. Just know that you are not alone.

25 years old. Leave or take ovaries!!!!! HELP!Struggle with PCOS and pain

This surgery isn't just for PCOS I have struggled for years with bad bad periods or no periods at all for 6-9 months or longer. Plus I have PCOS as well so I didn't know if taking ovaries if that would help anything but I have read a lot on it and been talking to a lot of people and I think I'll leave ovaries.

I would leave the ovaries for now. They are very important for women even when they are not working. If you are still having problems you can get them removed at a later day.

Re: 25 years old. Leave or take ovaries!!!!! HELP!Struggle with PCOS and pain

Back in 1974 I had a wedge resection as a last ditch effort to get pregnant. Back then it was the last thing when you had PCOS. I never got pregnant but it did give me regular monthly periods and no longer had the horrible pain with it. The surgery allows the eggs to escape instead of stay trapped in the thick mucus surrounding the ovaries. Wonder if the doctor would do that if it would help so you could keep them?

PCOS is a symptom of insulin resistance, not the cause. The ovaries do not cause it. Do they contribute - who knows. My glucose readings have stayed the same as before surgery.

Re: 25 years old. Leave or take ovaries!!!!! HELP!Struggle with PCOS and pain

Hi Hgwhitt -

I asked our wise hostess group about insulin resistance and PCOS and here is what one said:

"PCOS is a disorder of the entire endocrine system with polycystic ovaries being just one possible symptom. You can have insulin resistance without PCOS and vice versa. One does not necessarily cause the other though many women with PCOS will also have insulin resistance."

Please discuss issues of concerns with insulin resistance with your doctor.
