TLH and oophorectomy due to genetics/family

Had LBSO due to genetic marker for both ovarian/breast cancer; family history--mother & her mother.

No HRT

Decision based on talking w/ Dr.'s about my risk *a LOT* of getting either cancer.

So glad I did it!! Other than the usual hot flashes/night sweats, would not change my decision for one minute.

Hot flashes were bad last week, not so bad this past week. Night sweats--got some new nightgowns, turn on the ceiling fan, less covers, doing o.k. now.

When I got the results from the BRCA testing, was crushed, talked with a friend & she told me to look at it this way "it's a gift wrapped in trash." Boy, was it ever!! It took several months, some more Dr. appt.'s, a couple lab visits & finally had surgery scheduled--for me it took from late last summer to just this past March 14 to get it all done--had to do around my schedule & Dr.'s of course.

So glad I don't have to worry now about what will happen.

Will alternate every six months between breast MRI & mammogram; most likely still get transvaginal ultrasound once a year just to make sure nothing is unusual.

If anyone has the opportunity to know what the future might hold for them, go for it & have the BRCA testing. It's definitely a "gift wrapped in trash", but it's definitely a gift we cannot afford to leave unwrapped.

Re: TLH and oophorectomy due to genetics/family

Hi, I had my surgery bc of Brca too. I like the gift wrapped in trash image. Lol. Also I just wanted to see if you already know about force, its an online support like this for Brca folks. I know both sites have been really helpful to me through all this in the past few months.

Re: TLH and oophorectomy due to genetics/family

I only had ovaries/fallopian tubes removed, still have uterus & cervix.
Have not done a lot of reading on Force board, but have lurked.
Still, one wonders how many people out there know there is a way to try & prevent o.c.
It's pretty mainstream to have mastectomy, but not many have heard of doing BSO to prevent o.c.
