Traveling 4 weeks post-op

Hi Ladies!
I had a Davinci/vaginal hysterectomy on 12/18. Surgery went well, and took about 4.5 hours. I had a large fibroid with lots of internal cutting and stitching. My surgeon removed uterus and cervix, but left my ovaries. My recovery has been uneventful. I'm sore, emotional, and tired. The usual. I'm also anemic from heavy bleeding prior to surgery.
I will be traveling by car at 4 weeks into my recovery. There will be several days with 6-8 hrs. of drive time. I know I will need to rest and stretch frequently, drink lots of water, and bring my trusty pillow pet. I am wondering if any of you have traveled extensively during your recovery? Do you have any tips/advice?
I have my first post-op appointment a few days prior to my trip, so I will definitely be checking with my doctor. Thank you in advance for all of your support! Happy New Year!
-Rachel

Re: Traveling 4 weeks post-op

I took a family vacation at 4 weeks post op. with my doctors okay. it was over a 9 hr trip to and back in a car. We spent 2 full days at an amusement park with a lot of walking. Then the last 2 days where driving and sight seeing before the long trip home Best advise I can give you is listen to your body. Make as many stops as you need too. I stopped every hour on the hour while I was in the car. While i was at the amusement park walking around I took serveral breaks where I sat down and relaxed as best I could. I had swelly belly at the end of my active days and had an evening of slight pain from walking all day. But it was nothing I could not handle . Make sure your doctor knows what you have planned and he clears you to go. You should be okay

Re: Traveling 4 weeks post-op

Hi,
I agree. Check with your dr that they are ok with you travelling extensively.
My dr.'s were fine with me travelling and I did a fair bit of travel in the first 6 weeks following surgery : driving, flying, train etc.
My tips:
Have a flexible enough schedule so that if you need to have a shorter day you can
Allow for a good nights rest in a decent bed at the end of each day's travel
Wear comfy clothes that can accommodate a swelly belly
Stop frequently to stretch your legs
I found that a 5hr trip stretched to 7hrs because I needed to stop more often.
