In shock at diagnosis - complex hyperplasia with atypia
Just came home from my dr's with a diagnosis of complex hyperplasia with atypia and he recommends a full hysterecomy including ovaries. I am in shock! Found this site, sounds wonderfull. Read about not taking the cervix, has anyone been through that.

In shock at diagnosis - complex hyperplasia with atypia
I had had a LAVH and BSO in seperate procedures, but perhaps someone can answer your cervix question. I understand the shock, my procedures are done and I think I am still in shock. I think for me it will just take getting back into the normal groove called life after surgery! I wish you the best!!!! Lots of hugs and prayers snoop!

I understand the shock issue as well. I am 31 and just had a LAVH/BSO... Just read, educate yourself. Be comfortable with your decision.

In shock at diagnosis - complex hyperplasia with atypia
I'm having a TAH/BSO on October 15 for severe complex hyperplasia with atypia. The cervix is going too but that may be because there was at least one polyp on my cervix. It is really scary.

In shock at diagnosis - complex hyperplasia with atypia
I had a similar diagnosis - complex hyperplasia with atypia. It was pretty shocking - the only reason I even had a biopsy was so I could get an ablation, and apart from unbelievably heavy and painful periods, there was no indication of anything wrong. The whole process took about one month from diagnosis to surgery, and I don't think I really understood the magnitude of the situation for a couple of weeks. It was pretty stunning.
My surgeon took the uterus and cervix, because of the possibility of cervical cancer, but left the ovaries. Do you know why your doctor is recommending removal of the ovaries?

No, I don't know why he is taking the cervix or ovaries, but I believe it is to be sure there are no cancer cells present. I am also 59 and through menopause. I see him again Oct 17th so plan ti ask some more questions. Friday I was in shock and didn't take it all in. Having read some this week-end now have a list of questions? Thanks for all the hugs and prayers.

Hi Snoop,
I went through this same thing last year, only I was 49 and was on the verge of menopause.
I have a couple of suggestions for you. The first one is to ask to have the biopsy re-read at another hospital or lab. In fact, one study found that 60 percent of biopsies originally thought to represent hyperplasia were normal when reviewed by an expert pathologist. Only 3 percent of these biopsies were found to represent cancer.
I had mine originally read at my local hospital and had it re-read at a major center. Unfortunately, my re-read did not get better.. it got worse. I went from having hyperplasia w/ atypia to actually having cancer present.
My second suggestion:
See a gyn/oncologist. There's a new report out that shows that women have MUCH better outcomes when originally treated by a gyn/onc.
Ovarian And Endometrial Cancer Patients Experience Improved Outcomes When Treated First By A Gynecologic Oncologist
"For the first time, accumulated data demonstrates that women diagnosed with a reproductive cancer, especially ovarian and uterine (endometrial) cancers, experience improved outcomes when treated first by a gynecologic oncologist."
You can see the whole article here:
http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/122851.php
I know how hard it is to ask for a second opinion. I was particularly afraid to do so because my husband has a professional work relationship with the gyn group I was seeing..and I didn't want to injure him professionally. But I gathered my courage and did so.. and at first I was sorry I did because the gyn/onc I was sent to was Dr. Doom/Gloom.
Then I got mad and found a gyn/onc who did minimally invasive surgery and got a referral to her.. and things went MUCH much better.
As to why they recommend taking the ovaries, it was explained to me that the uterus, tubes, ovaries, cervix, etc. all share the same blood supply. So if there is a chance of cancer and you are near or past menopause, they recommend taking the ovaries. I still wish I had discussed that with my surgeon a little more.. but I was in shock mode.
This is a difficult time, but you will get through it. Best wishes to you in your journey.

In shock at diagnosis - complex hyperplasia with atypia
It certainly is a shock! I was just as blind-sided with the same diagnosis. At 53, I thought I was experiencing peri-menopausal symptoms. Turns out my light daily spotting had nothing to do with approaching menopause. After an abnormal Pap test and elevated CA 125 test, my family physician sent me to a gynecologist. She did an endometrial biopsy and the results came back as complex hyperplasia with atypia. And I would need a TAH/BSO. That was mind-blowing. Never did I think I would ever need a hysterectomy!
I asked about putting off the surgery for several months, but my doctor recommended having it done this summer. Good thing I had it done within a couple months. Stage 1 endometrial cancer was already present when my uterus was sent to the lab for pathology. I had read that our condition can be concurrent with cancer about 30% of the time.
I did the same as you, looking for information on the Internet. Keep reading other sites to become well-informed, but stay with Hystersisters, too, as you'll find a wealth of information and support from others who are experiencing (or already have) the same questions as you. Prior to my surgery, I always kept a notepad with me so when I read something, heard something, or thought of a question, I'd write it down immediately so I'd have my list ready when I went to a doctor appointment.
As far as ovaries, Fallopian tubes, and cervix, my doctor took them all, so as not to risk getting cancer later. Now I'm very glad she did. I'm not on HRT, and other than what I would call warm flashes and a few hot flashes, I've not really had any problems. In fact my recovery has gone very smoothly! I know medication is a phone call away, if I need it in the future.
Best wishes to you. I am very thankful for my physicians in catching my condition at an early stage.

In shock at diagnosis - complex hyperplasia with atypia
At almost 57, I had the same diagnosis after a d&c. But it took several pathologists to make the determination; the first ones saw no cause for my spotting other than some shrunken firbroibs (a biopsy and ultrasound about six months before were also negative.)
I had the TAH/BSO a month ago, and got the all clear. My condition really was severe adenomyosis (and some fibroids we already knew about)! I have had virtually no pain from day 1, and if anything my hot flashes/ nightsweats are less than before the procedure. So I suggest listening to your doctor, relax as much as possible, (I prayed a lot), and waiting for the result of the pathology report after the hysterectomy. You will be just fine!
