How long DO you have to wait before giving blood? I am almost 6 weeks. (Just in case there are special blood drives.)

Margaret,
You should call your doctor and ask him that question. I would imagine it depends on your individual circumstances. I commend you for thinking of others even as you are healing.
Love,

I dont care!
I am only 3 and 1/2 weeks post and I am going to give some!!! I am fine and I will make all attempts to help my fellow Americans in a time of need. They will have to throw me out the door of the blood bank or take my blood.

Ann: you may not have a choice. They will most likely do a screening, ask questions. Chances are your blood still has traces of the meds and anesthetic that were used during your stay at the castle. Furthermore, your levels are probably too low, which wouldn't be good for anybody receiving your blood.
Ann, I know you want to help your countrymen. However, your country will understand that you have to recover from this surgery.
A great big for a lady with a great big heart.

I am 5 weeks before surgery..... can I give blood. Our wait at the local blood bank is 3+ hours. Hate to be told when I get to screening.

Traci, your best bet is to either call the blood bank or your doctor.
If you've been bleeding a lot, it might also depend on your blood levels.

giving blood
I had to have a blood transfusion due to my heavy bleeding....will I be able to give blood in the future? (my surgery date is Friday, so it won't be now)....or am I forever banned? No one has ever told me either way.
Thanks.

Debkins, that would be a good question to ask your doctor. I would think that once your surgery is over, are recovered and your levels back up, you should be OK.

Check with your Doctor before giving blood
Hi gals,
I sure love the support on this site. We have women facing surgery and others recovering. Everyone is wanting to donate blood due to the attack in America today.
As stated previously, all of you Pre and Post Op gals need to contact your own doctor first!!!
Dany has an excellent point for Post-Op gals----traces of medications and anesthesia remain in our body for weeks. You would not want to jeapordize yourself or the recipient of your blood by donating too soon. Let's BE SAFE for all concerned!
The American Red Cross does a very careful screening and chances are high that you will be very graciously turned away.
Debkins: Contact your doctor. I'm sure that you can't give blood now and you will probably have to wait quite some time before being eligible. Eventually you will probably be able. I'm guessing but it's definitely not going to be anytime soon. Your doctor and the American Red Cross will be able to answer your questions.
Thanks for the BIG HEARTS ladies.
s to all,
Patty

Thanks Patty and everyone else....
I will definately ask my doctor tomorrow during pre-op exactly when it will be safe for me to donate. I'm thankful that someone donated for me, and hopefully in the future I can repay that debt.
Good night all!
