Where DOES the blood come from?

I was reading over the posts regarding the varying amounts of bleeding afterwards....from nothing to weeks and weeks.

I am confused on what this blood is from or where it is from. Meaning, if they are taking the uterus/cervix and stitching up internal/external incisions.....what is the blood from with those that bleed a lot or a long time?

Sorry if I am missing something obvious here.....but I am perplexed
(insert Jeopardy music)

Re: Where DOES the blood come from?

Well when they go cutting things out things tend to bleed. I'm 15 days post-op and I had VERY little bleeding afterwards but still had some. The vaginal cuff tends to bleed a little as well as the stitches are healing.

As told to me by my Dr.

Re: Where DOES the blood come from?

As stated above, it is from the surgery itself. I myself had a TAH and absolutely NO bleeding of any kind from hour one out of the OR. My cuff was completely healed at 6 weeks, no stitches left so even that didn't bleed. I think with many of the minimally invasive procedures there is less of an opportunity to clean up the surgical blood, so it has to go somewhere....Best of luck!

Re: Where DOES the blood come from?

Thanks everyone.

I am trying to get everyone prepared ahead of time so I bought a super-duper box of pads just in case. I live in the sticks with no other drivers in my house so I have to really preplan.

The more I read about the bleeding, the more it perplexed me.

I didn't need to use nothing more than a panty liner at best, and most of the 'bleeding' I noticed was when I used the restroom. It's now a real light pink to nothing.

Re: Where DOES the blood come from?

I was about to ask a similar question. So glad I ran across this. That is one more question I can check off my list!

Re: Where DOES the blood come from?

Bleeding after surgery won't be period like. IF you have any it will be mostly spotting from where they couldn't 'suction' out whatever was left behind post-op and from the vaginal cuff healing.

Re: Where DOES the blood come from?

Depends on the type of surgery and whether or not you have a cuff. I had a DvH, kept cervix and ovaries so did not need a cuff - the uterus was the only thing removed. I had very light spotting (light pinkish) the first couple days, absolutely nothing since.

Re: Where DOES the blood come from?

KachinaBean you're right. If you're keeping your cervix then you don't need the vaginal cuff - I had mine removed.
