Dilaudid Reactions??

So when i woke up on August 19th after my surgery around 8:30am i was given 2 doses of morphine. it did absolutely NOTHING for me for pain. So then they gave me Dilaudid. It sure did something but not for pain. It made me ITCH. What is it?? I was so itchy from head to toe but i couldn't scratch my toes because i had these massagers on my legs and a cath in my urethra. Trying to get comfortable was the worst. I was so glad once those massaging things came off and the cath came out. I peed within 40 min or so of it coming out. I was told to ring for the nurse to help me get out of bed for the first time. Ugggh. I did it on my own. I walked ever so slowly to the bathroom. I was still itching from that med for like 2 days. It was awful.

I am on Dilaudid again too (had to have another repair surgery) and I noticed it does make me a bit itchy too. Must be a side effect. It does make me very thirsty too but helps me with the pain. Perhaps you should switch.

I had a major itch reaction to the dilaudid. The nurse brought me benadryl, which helped.

I am not on it. it was given to me in IV...and i told them to never give it to me ever again. i was not happy. Prescription meds were 600 mg if Ibuprofen and 5/325 percocets (I can't take the percs without vomiting so i didn't take any of those)

Itching as a reaction to some narcotics is very common. I got Benadryl automatically in my IV to be sure that if there was any reaction, it would be taken care of immediately. I am surprised that Benedryl was not ordered for you, but then again, I am not a doctor.

It is a good idea for you to ensure that your medical record notes that morphine and Dilaudid do not work for you for pain and that you react to Dilaudid.

I was given dilaudid for another surgery but because of major hallucinations and severe nausea, I informed everyone not to ever give me anything close to it, morphine did it for me in the hospital and when released hydrocodone and 600 mg ibrupropen worked for me. If I itched, I had no idea because I probably thought it was the hallucinations.

Can you believe that Benadryl makes me hallucinate! I will take a little itching with the Dilaudid any day!

They gave me Dilaudid in the recovery room and it made me soooo nauseous!! I begged them to take it away and they gave me a nerve block instead which lasted about 8 hours. After that I only wanted Tylenol.

You can definitely have a reaction to Dilaudid. I can't take it anymore because of swelling, hives and then anaphylaxis I might ask for some Bendaryl. That should help. Hope your itching gets better. They might be able to give you something else for pain.
