Waiting is hard....
I have been in the bed in pain now since March 9. Went to local urgent care clinic on March 11 for 99.6 fever, nausea, pain on lower left side, and pain in lower back. I also have pains shooting down my thigh and left buttock. I was prescribed Lortab and Naproxen for pain and an ultrasound scheduled for March 14th. PCP phoned March 15 and informed me the ultrasound revealed I have a complex ovarian cyst and that it will need to be removed, said something to the effect that threre is blood inside it??? He scheduled an appointment with my OB/GYN and said the earliest he could see me is Wednesday, March 22 at 2:00. So basically I am just lying in the bed most of the time and this is driving me crazy. I can't be on my feet for more than 15-20 minutes without the pain sending me back to bed.
I am very concerned about the prospect that the cyst could be cancerous. My sister had her ovaries removed 12 years ago for ovarian cancer. I had my uteris removed 4 years ago for large fibroid tumors and now this. Can anyone share information with me on complex ovarian cysts? Does anyone think waiting another 5-6 days before seeing someone is dangerous? I mean, should I have insisted I see someone else or is it okay to wait? The dr. I will be seeing is considered one of the best OB/GYN surgeons in the area which is a good reason to wait. On the other hand, have I mentioned that the waiting is driving me nuts??? I would so appreciate any feedback, I am imagining the worst at times which is only counterproductive.

Waiting is hard....
Sorry you're going through this--it must be so frustrating. My understanding is that generally, cysts with blood in them are "hemmorhagic cysts", which are benign (NOT cancerous) but can cause a ton of pain, just like you're feeling. Sometimes they go away on their own, but when they cause pain, they do need to be removed with laparoscopic surgery.
Complex cysts are partly fluid filled and partly solid filled, or else cysts with internal walls. Sometimes these aren't benign.
Waiting the 5 to 6 days is hard because of the pain, but it's unlikely to be dangerous or increase the risk of any bad outcome. Another gyn with a lesser reputation might not be able to see you any sooner. But call your doctor back and ask him or her to explain more about the possibilities, so you don't have to go through this uncertainty. Make sure he or she knows your sister had ovarian cancer. And make sure he or she gives you some meds that will better control your pain--being stuck in bed for 12 days with excessive pain is terrible.
Your age matters too--cysts are much more likely to be benign if you're still ovulating than if you're menopausal.
Good luck! Here's a link to some more information:

Waiting is hard....
Hi,
My hysterectomy was completely unexpected. An abdominal CT showed an ovarian mass, and I got a call from my PCP that I would be seeing a gyn/oncologist. I was totally freaked out (my story is in the journals area under my name if you want all the details.) I found an amazingly helpful book: The Mayo Clinic Guide to Women's Cancers. It has great pictures and helped me quickly understand ovarian cancer without dumbing it down or overly condensing it. I had my hysterectomy 10 days later because of this cancer scare, expecting to learn that I had fairly early stage ovarian cancer.
It was benign. It turned out that I had terrible endometriosis, but never knew that I had it. (Most women know they have endo because of the pain involved; I just knew that I had bad cramps and heavy periods.)
My endo had backed up from the uterus through the tubes and created cysts in both ovaries, (endometriomas, I think?) although only the right mass showed on CT scan and ultrasound. I also was full of adhesions among bowel, bladder and other organs. The surgery was initially diagnostic but I decided at age 53 to have him take everything (vertical TAH/BSO) to prevent future surgeries. I also have an aunt who died of uterine cancer at about my age, and the surgeon agreed about taking everything when he learned that.
So learn something about endometriosis, if you can, as well. I'm not a medical professional, but I believe that dark ("chocolate") ovarian cysts are filled with old blood. It might be related to what they think you have.
My surgery went well even though I was beyond terrified (it's all in my journal) and my recovery has gone very well. I'm 4 1/2 weeks into recovery and doing great. I'd be back at work full time except for the fatigue.
I will hope that your situation turns out as well as mine did. Mine was also a blessing in disguise, because the pathology report showed precancer cells in my uterus.
I wish you the best. Let me know if I can be any more helpful. Your situation sounds very familiar. Please continue to hope for the best while preparing for anything, as I did.
Holly
