Infection?

I have another question for all of you. I am obviously new here, so I apologize if all this has been covered in the past. I am a tiny bit worried about an infection. I had a TVH on Sept. 10. I have the low back pain and low abdominal side pain that I've read many of you have had. I seem to run a slight fever every evening ranging from 99.4 to 99.9. It says on my discharge sheet that I should call if I get a fever above 101 degrees.

Here's the problem. SEveral years ago, I had pneumonia somewhere around 13 times in one year and never once had a fever. It was only found on chest x-rays. I also had an episiotomy repair done a few years ago and ended up with an infection even though my dr. assured me that my chances of an infection were less than 1%. I didn't have a fever then either, which delayed my treatment by about a week. I was admitted into the hospital for 3 days with IV and oral antibiotics.

I was able to kind of see the infection there (with the aid of a mirror, and...........my dh ). I was also able to feel it. It was very painful. I don't know of my pain is an infection now or not since I have no external incisions. I can't see if there is an infection, and with the other surgery, I had irritation of the site due to wearing underwear and the constant friction that there is in that area.

So I guess I'm looking for someone that has had experience with an infection with a vaginal hysterectomy - no external incisions to help guide you to it.

Infection?

I was worried about this 2 weeks post op and I called my doc becuase of a foul odor. I was told that was normal but to call if I ran a fever over 101 or if I had a yellow discharge. Running a low grade fever is normal in the evenings too as that is when your body temp is its highest. If you're concerned about it, call your doc in the morning and talk to him. I wouldn't worry too much about an infection though if you're not running a higher fever though or don't have an unusual discharge. Take care.

Infection?

ScrapperJen,

I, too, had low back pain and a low grade fever. It ended up that I had a UTI, which we're at risk for because we've had catheters. Drink lots of water and cranberry juice tonight, but I'd call your doctor in the morning. I went into the office confessing my soul about how I'd done too much and my surgeon looked at me and said, "I'll put you out of your misery. Your urine is junky." I knew right away that he meant I had a UTI. A day after the antibiotic started, I was much better. Not saying you have one, but it may be something to follow up on.

Infection?

Hmmmm.....UTI. I've thought of that - especially since I've been peeing way more than I used to. But no burning. I know that's a big symptom, but I suppose it isn't necessary. I think I'll hold my urine before my appt. so he can check it.

As for the catheter? I had to have 2 of them. Yikers!!! My urethra has a hard time waking up from surgery and I can't pee for HOURS after a surgery. I finally give in and accept a catheter. Those are awful things!!! Especially if you're awake for the experience!
