Ovaries or No Ovaries?
Hello Sisters,
I just got my surgery date - Sept. 19th. I feel like the more information I get the more apprehension I have about my surgery. I first went to a urologist for my leaky bladder and was told I need surgery to repair it and also rectocele. He referred me to the Ob-Gyn who wants to do a SAH, removing tubes and both ovaries because of the cancer history in my family. (not ovarian cancer) the dr. wants to leave my cervix. I also have 5 fibroids, painful & heavy periods.
I am 51 and probably a year away from menopause, but have read the benefits of hormones from ovaries in later years; I'm confused, there's so much info for pros and cons. Mostly I'm scared, having read about the frequency of adhesions and complications. I believe I'm in God's hands, but am I choosing to solve small problems with larger problems?
Thanks for listening - so glad you're all here!

Ovaries or No Ovaries?
My doctor is planning on keeping my ovaries, he says, they are still functioning, so UNLESS he gets inside and sees something abnormal like cysts or something, he intend to leave them in. They do continue to make both estrogen and progesterone, so you might ask your doctor the reasoning why the intend to remove them. The type of cancer in your family history may have something to do with the decision. You can get more natural hormones by using a compounding pharmacy and your blood or saliva tests to have more natural hormone replacement - personalized for you. You might be interested to read Suzanne Summers books about menopause, she has some good information.
you will be gathering lots of information now, until your surgery so you will be very prepared to have this conversation with your doctor when you do your pre op or sooner. Until then ask, read and explore your options~

Ovaries or No Ovaries?
Hi Irisfiddle,
I was 46 when I had my hyst and I decided to keep my ovaries. They were healthy and ovarian cancer does not run my family.
In pre-op, I did (3) months of lupron shots to shrink my fibroids enough for my LSH. I experienced temporary chemical menopause with hot flashes and night sweats to name a few side effects. I decided then if this is what surgical menopause was like I wanted natural menopause, since I was a good candidate.
I had the same agreement that Ktys has with her Dr. My Dr. and I agreed that he would leave my ovaries if they were healthy and remove them if he saw a problem.
In my research in pre-op, I found out the ovaries secrete important hormones that help with the bones, skin and hair to name a few. And newer studies show that the ovaries secrete hormones well into menopause. So, in my case, I did not want to remove my healthy ovaries to prevent something that might never happen. My Dr. had told me that approx. 5% or less of women get ovarian cancer and that was good odds for me.
Sending best wishes~
Mary
