Re: Quick, Urgent Question About Post-Op
RunningWoman, I have the same reservations as you do. I am STILL waiting since Friday for the scheduler to call me back and she hasn't yet. I should be getting ready for the surgery tomorrow and that really irritates me but I cannot change it soo ...
I have been tossing around the idea of looking for a new doctor and getting another opinion, but truly, their are so few doctors where I live, the state I live in. I could travel 2 hours to one, but for how often I would need to see them, it's not feasible. I too worry about after the surgery and what kind of problems I would have getting in touch with the doctor. But, and I have thought of this, it's not the doctor i have a problem getting in touch with, or her nurse. The nurse calls me back pretty quickly, at least the same day, and the doctor has called me multiple times. Its the office manager, the one who makes appointments, that seems to constantly drag her feet. I bet if I called i would find she is out of the office AGAIN, I am trying to make excuses for her but they are wearing thin. Truly, I am at the end of my patience. I am actually going to be calling the office as soon as I post this thread. I hate being such a pain in the butt it feels like, and I also know from working in some offices, that if a patient becomes too difficult they can be pretty harsh in not answering them. It does not happen too often.
I will let you know how it goes, please do not give up, i understand TOTALLY about being at a 'standstill' and not having plans or anything to work towards. I have my classes to keep me busy till my surgery, and thats fine but its hard to even concentrate on that.
If you do not hear anything by about an hour before closing or right after lunch, i would call back again. Explain to the receptionist that you need to know the date because you have previous engagements and committments you need to work around. If they are human they will understand. I wish you luck and please keep me updated. I will let you know how this goes with my call.
Hugs

Re: Quick, Urgent Question About Post-Op
Tine - thanks, it really helps to know I'm not alone! I *finally* got a call from the doctor. Once again (how do you always know?) you were right, he did know that I had chosen to get a hysterectomy, I suppose he listened to my voice mails to his scheduler, he verified a few things, and then transferred me to directly to her. We set a date for the surgery (April 19) and she was going to send some things through email which I haven't received and then I was supposed to call her back, but I have questions. Am I not going to have a pre-op appointment? Was the only time I get to talk to the doctor that brief two minute discussion when he called me before the operation? I don't even know if I'm keeping my cervix! I have no reason to believe he's removing it, he didn't say he was, but he didn't say he was leaving it either and I don't know the reasons people have it removed, just that removing it is one of the scenarios.
I know I'm panicking and now I'm questioning if I'm doing the right thing, but you're absolutely right, I don't want to be a pain in the butt to the people in the office which is why I haven't been calling and calling them. It's taken a LOT, and I mean a LOT of restraint, however.
Have you heard from your scheduler? Is anyone else having the same problem?

Re: Quick, Urgent Question About Post-Op
I've dealt with so many doctors, it gets second nature to try to think like them. Although at times second guessing them is not the best thing you can do. And sometimes having a 'little knowledge' is very bad. I have learnt to try to NOT read too much online about stuff and surgeries I am having done.
If you have any questions, call the office and ask to speak to his nurse. She can answer any questions you have and put some of your fears to rest. You should have a pre-op with the doctor, to go over exactly what they are going to do and to do another exam. That is usually standard procedure it seems like and my doctor did the same thing. One good thing is my doctor did not need me to do a bowel prep the night before, which would be great.
I was told that about 95% of the time they also take the cervix, unless you have bladder problems, most doctors (tho not all ) like to take it. That is one question you should ask the nurse.
The scheduler still has not called me back.
Good Luck
Hugs
