How long does brain fog last after surgery?

How long does it take to feel mentally sharp again after surgery?
I'm 3 weeks post SAH & rectocele repair. All went well & I'm making a good recovery, but my brain doesn't yet feel as sharp as usual. I feel I have to concentrate harder for normal things, I lack motivation & feel generally tired & a bit dreamy.
I realise I've had a 2 hr anaesthetic, a morphine pump & a load of other drugs, and I'm also a bit anaemic (haemoglobin was 98 post-op) but I'm only on the occasional paracetamol (acetaminophen) now. Hoping I'll feel back to normal soon. Love to hear about your experiences of this.

Re: How long does brain fog last after surgery?

It took me about 4 weeks before the brain fog began to lift. Once it started to lift it still took many weeks for my brain function to get back to normal! Be patient, it does all get better with time!

Re: How long does brain fog last after surgery?

I had TAH on 7/26 and had to have another open abdominal surgery for complications on 8/23. I'm still not back to myself mentally. My doc isn't putting me on hormones until 6 months after surgery because of endo. From what I have heard and read, hormones, anesthesia, medications, lack of sleep, etc can all cause brain fog. I'm hoping everyone is right when they say it will get better soon. Good luck, I hope you feel better soon!

It'll pass. It took me about 3 or 4 weeks. I didn't like the feeling.

Re: How long does brain fog last after surgery?

I thought mine was getting better a week ago... Then I went to make some filter coffee and put the whole beans into the water compartment of the coffee maker rather than the grinder...

Re: How long does brain fog last after surgery?

Ha! My husband just joked that it hasn't come back for me! I forgot I had bought my daughter a backpack for school..my son insisted I did. I honestly didn't recall the shopping trip or the backpack. We got a new one, this was a week later mind you, and what do you think I found a half hour after we got home?! Backpack number one..I got it the week before, still no memory of buying it tho!
