Did you develop a blood clot?

post-op? Was wondering how you knew? I thought I had one then the pain went away and I talked to my doc on the phone. He said if the pain returned I should go to er for testing.

Re: Did you develop a blood clot?

doesiteverend,

I vaguely remember having a scan done when there was concern that I might have one. I was a bit loopy as this was right after a procedure several years ago. Hopefully another sister will come along that can give you more up to date information.

If you are in pain, please be sure to get to the ER.

Re: Did you develop a blood clot?

I have a clotting disorder so I have to be very careful- blood clot symptoms should be taken seriously. The symptoms can be vague & confusing: sharp, burning, worsening pain in the calf or leg, like a cramp but it doesn't go away or a hot, tender spot. Usually the leg is where you'd have symptoms, it's the most common spot, chest pain or difficulty breathing is less common & more dangerous.

If you suspect you have a blood clot they can do an ultrasound of the blood vessels, check blood clotting tests and if they have any reason to suspect a blood clot in the lungs they'll do a special kind of CT scan so if you do go the doctor it's best to go where they can do all of those tests, like the ER.

My post-op treatment includes 2 weeks of anticoagulant injections to make sure I don't develop a clot. My surgeon mentioned that he orders injections on the day of surgery for all his patients. You might ask your doctor if they gave you any preventative treatment when you were in the hospital? Hope you get answers soon.

Re: Did you develop a blood clot?

I had a blood clot in my leg in 1993. I was fortunate as I caught it extremely early and did not have pain. I noticed my foot was swollen and warm to the touch. I had been on bed rest for 3 weeks and my son was only 6 days old, but I knew something was wrong. I was shocked to find out it was a blood clot as they said most people have a red streak and/or pain before they realize it. If you have any pain at all, I'd go to the ER. It is not something you want to take a chance on, and there's a simple blood test they can do to see if it's a possibility. (I've been through this a couple of times since 1993. DD had knee surgery 01/27 and ended up going to the hospital by ambulance because of shortness of breath. Her blood test came back slightly elevated and they did a CT scan which didn't show anything.) Hope this helps.
