How long until the PMS type symptoms stop?

So glad to hear I'm not the only one having problems with hormones afterwards. I am 7 weeks post-op kept my ovaries. I still am experiencing PMS type symptoms with the moods, chocolate cravings, pimples, and I swear my body is trying to ovulate. I had my period every two weeks before hysterectomy, and luckily this isn't that often, (it had this twice so far) but when will it stop?
I have been told that eventually your body realizes it and stops this, but when? It's hard to explain to my husband that my mood swings are "PMS" when I just had a hysterectomy.

Re: How long until the PMS type symptoms stop?

The thing is that if you kept your ovaries, you will most likely continue to have hormone surges - fluctuations and yes - pms-like symptoms. The ovaries (not the uterus or cervix) is the hormone factory - and in a pre-menopausal woman, will likely continue to produce follicles (eggs) and induce ovulation. You will not "bleed" - because the uterus along with its lining is gone (that's what sheds every month making a period). But ... if you are not past menopause and are producing hormones from your ovaries - you will have "cycles".

Not sure how old you are, but I'm 46 (almost) and am wondering if I did the right thing by leaving those ovaries in. I am having a lot of highs/lows with the return of hormone production. I guess this is what they talk about as peri-menopausal. My body does not like the hormone fluctuations...and I get all kinds of symptoms with them.... The hard part is that I can't even track it well because I don't have the period judge exactly where I am in the cycle!

If you kept your ovaries like me. You will have those premenstrual symptoms. Just went through it. Wasn't as bad but they are still there. I was just glad there was no period to follow it.

Re: How long until the PMS type symptoms stop?

I am only 37, which is why my doctor wanted me to keep the ovaries. I only went along because I was told the "PMS" would eventually go away. I have problems with benign ovarian cysts developing when my body tries to ovulate, and also had my period every two weeks before the surgery. I guess I have to remember that the benefits of keeping them at my age (no early menopause, so no increased heart disease risk yet, no menopause symptoms) outweigh the bad parts of keeping them.
