Update: Got records from hysterectomy

Ok, I got hospital records I requested just for the three days after my hysterectomy. On the day of my hysterectomy there was an abdominal scan done on me- while I was still under anesthesia.... Reason: Missing needle intraoperatively(during operation) for hysterectomy. Findings: There is no evidence of metallic needle in the field of view. So they lost a needle, did a scan, couldn't find it. Never told me!!!' Can they scan you and not tell you??!!! I wouldn't be so upset by finding this out if I hadn't ended up in ICU when I woke up from surgery!!! And especially considering no one could figure out what was sending me into these painful convulsions, why didn't anyone mention there is a missing needle???! Then the next day during a scan that I was aware of, it states: Pelvis: Moderately large soft tissue density in pelvis which may represent postoperative hemotoma. I was not told this either!!!!! I went home and later developed the worst abdominal swelling and bruising anyone has ever seen !! Before hysterectomy I informed everyone that after breast aug, I developed a hemotoma and had to surgically put a drain in to drain the blood! Bleeding with me is very dangerous. I took her pictures of my bruising to my 4 week post op & her eyes about popped out of her head. Why has she withheld info from me? If I had no complications, I could understand. But going to a shock, thinking I was dying, only to return to hospital in another month with a blood clot in remaining ovary!!!! I am so angry. This is my body. I am taking this info with me to new doctor in December. And going to hospital to get more records!!! Anyone know why a doctor would not tell a patient this info?

Re: Update: Got records from hysterectomy

My guess is they either thought because they didn't find anything it wasn't important to mention, or they didn't want you investigating further and filing a complaint. I am not sure what the procedure is when it comes to revealing information to a patient.

Re: Update: Got records from hysterectomy

Thanks Ceri Cat! I wasn't sure either. And if I recovered with no complications, I could understand not mentioning it. But ending up in ICU the night of the hysterectomy because of the painful convulsions, and no one could ever figure out what happened exactly, I would think if I were a doctor, I would feel it was my duty to mention it. I also now have a kidney lesion! She didn't mention that, either!!! Boy, I tell ya! It's scary to think things can happen when you are under anesthesia and no one tells you.

Re: Update: Got records from hysterectomy

If you are really concerned with the way you were treated then you can always speak to the head of the department, head of surgery, or head of the hospital. You can even speak to your insurance company.

I am not one of those "sue everyone" type of person. In fact I give people a LOT of leeway. That being said I did file a complaint with my insurance company when I was severely mistreated in their ER. I was 5 months pregnant and took a really bad fall at work. I was rushed to the ER by ambulance and when they couldn't find a bed to put me in they made me get off the stretcher and go sit in the waiting room for hours, then made me get up and walk back and forth from the desk to the waiting room while they tried to decide what to do with me. Meanwhile I have no idea if my baby was alive, and I was having trouble breathing. They finally made me walk to a room on another floor, and did an ultrasound told me the baby was fine and kicked me out. I never saw a doctor, I never got treated for my lungs, Nothing. Then I got something from the hospital charging my insurance company like..600 bucks for the doctor I never saw. I filed a complaint and the insurance company dropped the hospital. The woman I spoke to was absolutely appalled, and my OBGYN was furious. I ended up back at the hospital like two days later (different hospital) where I was finally diagnosed with a broken rib. So there are people you can talk to if you are really upset, and if need be talk to a lawyer as well...for all you know they let the first years come in and "learn" using your body.

Re: Update: Got records from hysterectomy

I am definitly not into lawsuits. All I want is to feel better so I can be the mother to my four children(2,12,14, and 16) that I was before my surgery. I have accepted that I have to find another doctor. And that's why I requested the documents I got in the mail 2 days ago and was pretty much in shock reading what I posted on here. I just want to feel better, that's it I am a lover, not a fighter Thanks for your advice. When I was 5 months pregnant with my last, I was in a car accident. They took me to the local hospital. Where I was told they wouldn't check for fetal distress because at 22 weeks their rules were they wouldn't recisatite or even try to stop my labor!!! I walked out & never went back!! My aunt gave birth 11 years ago at 21 weeks and my cousin is just as healthy as anyone her age. It's just appalling how some hospitals treat their patients. I am excited to take my issues to a new hospital, a learning hospital for doctors . Thanks for your time

Re: Update: Got records from hysterectomy

Hi kyan! Did you read my other post about everything that happened after my hysterectomy & this year? I believe it's about 2 weeks old. I would love to chat and compare notes with you. Willing to do anything to feel close to what I did before my hysterectomy! I was so happy to stumble upon this site & write my story in hopes there may be another woman with similar issues, even better if she has a any words of wisdom!! Lol I spent probably four weeks total in hospital this winter after hysterectomy!!! All I got in the mail he other day was 2 days worth!!! Going back for more records! Really weird~this winter also ended up in ER of another hospital when I was fed up with other, they did an ultrasound and saw a shadow of an object in the area of my left ovary(kept that one), his doctor wanted me to call my OB that following week & ask her what it could be. Her answer "I don't knowwww" I have no
Clue if a needle laying around there poking on a nerve has caused this pain, but I can't rule it out. Can't wait to ask a doctor that wasn't involved in my catastrophe that may just be honest with me. It's just not fair... Besides having the complications, I am the ideal patient. I am polite, patient, and never pointed a finger at anyone. Just sat balling in her office this summer, begging her to fix me. Her answer: " I will not remove your other ovary, you have had a blood clot" " I don't know what to do with you" but this is also the same doctor that Anne in the room when the ER diagnosed me with the ovarian blood clot a month after hysterectomy and looked at me like it wasn't possible "there are only 7 documented cases of this-ever" "it can't be causing your symptoms- and I am not sure how to handle this" I was so excited when I was pregnant to find a young, female OB. No thanks....

Contact the house supervisor for the hospital where you had your procedure. Your concerns are valid, trust me its all about CYA (cover your ***) for the hospital. You do have a right to.know. God luck to you.
