Re: Abdominal vs Vaginal Hysterectomy

Yep -- in order to remove the uterus vaginally, the cervix has to come out as well.

I don't have anything to compare it with, but I had an abdominal on Halloween and am feeling great. I felt wrecked for two days afterwards but things started improving the minute I got on my feet and got out of the hospital. Percocet and ibuprofen for about a week and a half to two weeks or so, daily walks, stool softeners and lots of water and healthy, high-fiber food ... Certainly abdominal surgery is not a wonderful thing, but if you have to get it, it DOES get behind you eventually.

FWIW, my hyst was for a honking big fibroid, no endo/adeno/prolapse, or any other such complication. No concerns over cancer, thankfully.

Re: Abdominal vs Vaginal Hysterectomy

I am also having it for fibroids. I am scared to have my cervix removed as some people feel different without it - and you cant put it back..I have got the option of keyhole but am worried about the danger of puncturing the bowel.
Am i right to be scared
thanks abib

Re: Abdominal vs Vaginal Hysterectomy

People have made both decisions depending on how they felt -- some keep their cervix if possible, whereas others (like me) were happy to see it go. And women have reported happy sex lives with both situations, so I think it's a matter of whichever decision makes you feel the most comfortable.

I can't say if you're "right" or "wrong" to be scared. Surgery is a big thing, and it's completely understandable to be concerned or even scared. I can say that if you trust your surgeons and know that they know their stuff, you're in good hands and don't need to be scared. :-)

And if you have any questions, this is definitely the right place to come. I'm sure that someone else will chime in soon about their own experiences keeping or removing their cervix and what their surgeries were like.

Is there a particular reason you're worrying about a bowel puncture? (I'm assuming by "keyhole," you mean laparoscopic surgery.) Lots of women have had lap surgeries without incident, so it's a fairly standard surgical procedure.

Re: Abdominal vs Vaginal Hysterectomy

Hi thanks for the quick responses. My surgeon was telling me the pros and cons between the two types of surgery. It seemed to me that even though it is an "old fashioned" method of surgery less problems can occur - either with puncturing the bowel or problems with the bladder. My choice was made by thinking that for a bit of extra pain and a week or so extra recovery time I can avoid these problems.

Maybe I am wrong,my surgeon has no problem with me changing my mind to do a laporoscopy.

thanks everyone
