"Little Nervous"

Hello, I am getting ready to go in for surgery on the 21st for an abdominal hysterectomy. The dr. says six weeks worth of recovery time before i can go back to work. I want to go back sooner. Is having an abdominal hysterectomy that bad? What about the "intimacy" part with my husband? does it make it worse? The more I read up on this the more nervous I am. Some advice would be GREATLY appreciated.
Thanks a bunch!

Hi there! We're all a "little" nervous. Most of us are a LOT nervous. You're not alone.

There's great advice on this site. Make sure you read the post-op threads, too. I've learned a lot from reading the posts.

Good luck! I'm sure you'll find the information you need. If not, just ask.

Best wishes and welcome!

Wow! It looks as though you had a lot going on to have your hystere. How do you feel now? How long has it been since your surgery.

I had a TAH on 7/3/07. I went back to work at about 7 weeks and had sex the weekend after my 6 checkup. Work hasn't been so bad, except the first week when I was tired and sore. I've been back 3 weeks now, and everything's pretty much back to normal. Sex has been great so I didn't even notice my incision!

You all have good reason to be nervous. I too was nervous, but after my last period just before my surgery, I couldn't have been happier to have my parts taken out. I was MORE than ready!!!

I had a LAHV on the 18th of July (my birthday...great gift, isn't it?? )...but I had complications that I won't go into. Each of us recovers very differently. Do what your doctor says. You'll read all over this website that YOU ONLY HAVE ONE CHANCE TO HEAL CORRECTLY!! I had my post op this past week (I'm seven weeks post-op) and my doctor lifted all restrictions, including intercourse. I'm not sure that "I'm" ready for it yet though, although the outside healing is feeling alright. I have lots of other stuff going on.

Let your body tell you what you can and can't do. And don't overdo it. Rest, Rest, Rest!!! This is MAJOR surgery...and don't let anyone tell you otherwise!

Keep reading other posts...Poke around in some of the post-op pages to see how other women are doing. But do it knowing that what's happening to them may not necessarily happen to you.

I wish you all the best. A speedy recovery. Good health. And God Bless!

I had a TAH w/bso on July 12th. I won't lie... weeks 1 and 2 are rough but you get through that and little by little you feel better and better. I've had 2 c-sections but this was harder. With all that said... I feel GREAT now 7 almost 8 weeks out. I think I could have gone to work at week 5, but an extra week to rest is really important. You will heal FASTER if you take this time to REALLY do it. My drs. office was so booked he can't see me until next week to be cleared for ALL activity (wink wink). I would imagine that will go just fine. You can do this. You really can. You will do great and be so glad to just have it OVER with. We're all sending our very best your way.
