Surgery 5/1/13 - Not stressed. Am I the only one?

So, I have been reading these pre-op board posts and feel like I might be the only person in the world that isn't freaking out about this surgery. I am the opposite of freaking out - I am so looking forward to having a normal life again (life before fibroids). Sure surgery is never great, but neither is the way I'm living now with these stupid fibroids causing constant bleeding. Am I missing something???

Hi Jlspsg! to HysterSisters!

It is not unusual to experience emotional turmoil with this surgery. But, if you are very miserable in your current condition, it is very reasonable to look forward to the surgery as it will relieve your health problems. All is good, and we are all here to support each other - no matter how we are dealing with this surgery.

Re: Surgery 5/1/13 - Not stressed. Am I the only one?

I was also excited about it and just wanted it over and life to be back on track. I think people mainly post when they are nervous so you don't get to hear from the excited ones. Plus in the last few days I was so busy with work and sorting things out for coming home there was no time to think about the op. I also figured this is a relatively routine op, although major surgery, so I was less concerned about the surgery and more worried about things like how to do the washing after the op since I would be on my own after the first few days. Good luck with it all.

Re: Surgery 5/1/13 - Not stressed. Am I the only one?

I can honestly say I'm excited for the surgery to be done. Of course the pain and discomfort that comes with it is a bit scary mainly because I don't know exactly what to expect.
However with all the pain myself and most people on here experience leading up to surgery there is bound to be a great sense of relief when it's all over.

Re: Surgery 5/1/13 - Not stressed. Am I the only one?

I am with you - I have a few fears here and there that something could go wrong, but mostly I am excited about no more periods. No more embarrassing days where one tiny move means everyone knows what time of the month it is. Plus, my sisters have both had one and are happy for me - they both felt soooo much better when they had theirs done.

Re: Surgery 5/1/13 - Not stressed. Am I the only one?

I fluctuated. Some days I was like 'yes, get this OUT, whoot!' and as the date grew closer, most definitely the day before the bowel prep and then surgery, I was starting to feel nervous, but more for the after pains than anything. All feelings are very normal as we are all very different.

No matter what, just take calm assurance that once it's over, you'll be free of the pain (aside from healing pain) and once that's gone, that is IT. <3 you're going to do just fine, I promise <3

Re: Surgery 5/1/13 - Not stressed. Am I the only one?

I was marginally afraid of ANY surgery since I have nonalcoholic cirrhosis - at my stage of liver disease, my odds of dying increased by anywhere between 10x and 50x. So that was scary.

But I had a platelet transfusion to make it safer for me, and it had to be done. Other than being freaked out when they said they wouldn't start my platelets until after I was knocked out, I was ready to get it over with and get on with my life without the need of adult diapers to stop the bleeding or constant ultrasounds. (It didn't quite turn out that way, but I sure don't miss all the blood and mess.)

Surgery 5/1/13 - Not stressed. Am I the only one?

You are not alone. I wasn't freaking out either. I was looking forward to it too. Many years of stomach pain from endometriosis and cysts and fibroids. Had the surgery one month ago. All was going well until this week. Doctor says it feels like the top of my vagina feels rough. She may have to go back in and add more stitches. Has anyone out there had to do this?

Re: Surgery 5/1/13 - Not stressed. Am I the only one?

You are not alone at all! I had a TAH on March 26 and was not at all nervous. I think I knew I had made the right decision, chosen the right doctors and it was the only way to go forward
I have to say, 3 weeks post op, no regrets! I have been feeling great, listening to all the rules even though I feel like I could do more, I don't! LOL
I have been lucky enough to keep my ovaries and I have felt like myself since the surgery, really, I know I made the right decision and am looking forward to a life without any more monthy pain or bleeding. I can't believe it!!!

Re: Surgery 5/1/13 - Not stressed. Am I the only one?

Y'all are awesome! Thanks for helping me feel like I'm not missing something. Hopefully my recovery won't take a full 6 weeks. I am a workaholic freak so sitting still for even one day is hard. I'm hoping to be able to go to a work event about a week after surgery (a fashion show - nothing strenuous, just have to sit there).

Thanks again for helping me not feel bad for being ready for this!

xoxo
