Nervous wreak after pre-op call from hospital

First when I found out about my surgery I was happy ( no more pain and suffering) then I started to research and realized just how serious this was, first panic attack, was able to calm my self down so that I wasnt a nervous wreak for the 5 weeks prior to surgery. Then last week had my pre-op appointment and panic came rushing back, again managed to calm myself. Yesterday had a call to set up blood work and blood typing, had a massive panic attack when I realized that they were blood typing me in the event that they would have to transfuse me, finally started to calm down again. Then a little bit ago came the pre-op call from the hospital and my anxiety level has sky rocketed through the roof. The lady was asking me about living will and power of attorney and I realized that even though Im probably going to be just fine , there is a real possiblity I could have complications and even (though very very unlikely) death. I feel like a basket case now. Im so scared that im second guessing this now.. I hate feeling this way...
Sorry this is so long but I really needed to get it out.

Re: Nervous wreak after pre-op call from hospital

Just keep in mind your long term goal to feel better. Most of us sailed through the operation with little or no complications. My surgery was three weeks ago and I'm already back at work part-time.

Hang in there, we'll pray for smooth sailing for you. See you on the other side!

Re: Nervous wreak after pre-op call from hospital

I completely understand, my anxiety and bp is crazy just three weeks out. I went through many panic attacks this morning just trying to drag myself to work. I have generalized anxiety disorder normally, this has out me in a place that many years of therapy and med cocktails had fixed. If you're having panic attacks call your dr and maybe they can script a mild sedative to help. I'm so careful with my meds and never take more than prescribed. I'm calling tomorrow to see if they temporarily up the for to help me through the next 3 weeks. I hate having to resort to that, but it's temporary. Whatever you néed to get through this, do it. It's gonna be better in the other side. And just to say, all of your reactions and fears are normal. It's major surgery, it's scary, it makes you question things you might not normally. This is my second surgery and I know the last few weeks before is a real *****, but that doesn't keep me from reacting. We can do this, breathe and hang in there.

Re: Nervous wreak after pre-op call from hospital

One more thing to remember is that it is in the surgeons, nurses, anesthesiologist and other medical personnel's best interest that you have a successful surgery. They will do everything in their power to make sure you are okay.

By the way, you are doing a great job at keeping on top of your anxiety. You should be very proud of yourself! This surgery is scary to those of us who haven't had major surgery before and even to those who have. Try to keep busy and good luck!

Re: Nervous wreak after pre-op call from hospital

They asked me these questions as well. However, I also was asked these very same questions when I went in for my Colonoscopy. Please try not to worry, it will be okay.

Re: Nervous wreak after pre-op call from hospital

I was asked the same questions and was even given a bracelet for a blood transfusion because my iron levels and haemoglobin levels were so low. I never ended up with a blood transfusion All my worry was for not I came through with flying colours and so will you. Keep your chin up and keep yourself busy.

Re: Nervous wreak after pre-op call from hospital

These are standard admission to hospital questions. They are asked of EVERYONE, not just people having surgery.
If anxiety is making your life very difficult, maybe you can ask your gyn to prescribe something mild to help take the edge off during the time before surgery.
Good Luck!

Re: Nervous wreak after pre-op call from hospital

B R E A T H E!! I just did mine as well, surgery on Monday the 1st. I do think its standard question they ask with any type of surgery or hospital admission, basically there are always risks (however VERY small) with treatment and this is a major surgery.

GYN put me on Xanax for my nerves, its helped quite a bit, though I take a smaller amount then he prescribed just to take the edge off.
Works wonders...call your GYN and tell him or his nurse how you are feeling about all this, they may give you something to help.
