What a long road with hyst and ileus

Well, its been a really long road for me and I think I am finally starting to recover.

I have my TVH on 2/22. Should have been textbook (and they say it was) but had horrible pain following the surgery. I ended up in the hospital for two days managing the pain. Nothing seemed to work so they tried several narcotics.

I went home on Monday and ended up back in the ER on Tuesday with a very swollen belly and vomiting. Turns out I had ileus (bowel obstruction) and was readmitted to the hospital and had an NG tube inserted in my nose down to my belly to suck the contents out before I exploded. It was the most painful thing I had gone through EVER! I begged to get the tube out the following day. I stayed in the hospital another four days while they had me hooked to IV's and gave my bowels some time to recoup. I was finally taken off the IV's and have started toe at again on my own and my bowels are slowly regaining their original strength. I am able to eat real food but it is pretty painful to digest still. Gas pains are unbearable as they press on my sensitive surgery parts down there. I have been off all drugs for over a week because they slow your bowels so I have nothing to help with my hysterectomy pains. It's been pretty tough.

Luckily, I have had my sweet DH at my side every day since surgery. He is going back to work on Wednesday and I am a little freaked out. My mom is coming, but it's not my DH....

It seems that this is taking me so log to recover from. Has anyone else ever had ileus or known anyone with it? What was their experience. I am starting to wonder if I will ever be abel to digest food without pain again.

I am do sorry you have been dealing with an Ileus as well. Do you have an am NG tube? That was the worst part for me. I made it home and recovered from the Ileus only to find out I had a huge cyst on my remaining ovary. I ended up back in the hospital this Monday for ER surgery to remove my cyst and remaining ovary. Now I'm having to research HRT at 35... Sucks! What led to your Ileus? I haven't met anyone else that has gone through that with a hyst. I'd love to hear your story. I'm sending you lots of hugs and wishing you well. I understand the pain you must be in and feel for you.

Re: What a long road with hyst and ileus

They kept me 1 night and sent me home next day w/o me passing gas and with a catheter in. Back in ER next morning. They found my bowel was paralyzed from surgery. They wanted to do an ng tube and a rectal tube, but I convinced my dr to do rectal only at 1st. I had a hemmroid removed during my total hysterectomy and had stitches there so very painful. 4 days in hospital and I was able to come home. I am 6 wks post op today. Going to gi dr b/c still have stabbing pain in my upper abdomen and Gyn thinks its my intestines. He thinks they got twisted during all if this and didn't correct themselves. I didn't realize other people were going through this stuff. On the bright note for y'all, after getting cleaned out, I was able to eat again. But for some reason, granola kills me if I eat a normal size bowl of it
