Learn from my mistake, don't wait!
I'm so mad at myself I could scream - and I would too, except that I'm at work - all I can do is type.
I just came from my regular yearly Dr. appointment where I finally said "OK, I'm ready..let's schedule." He checked me and then said that my uterus feels like it has grown to the point where I can no longer do this vaginally! Can you believe it! The biggest thing holding me back from scheduling all along was that I didn't want to deal with the recovery, now I've just made it that much worse by being stubborn. I don't care about the surgery, losing my uterus, none of that, I just didn't want the recovery period - too disruptive - well this ought to be something!
I have to go for another sonogram to find out just how BIG I am. Oh, it's not just longer, but wider too......great.
What the heck was I thinking? I was hoping to magically get better and instead I made things worse.
Sorry to unload here, but I've made it this far without really telling anyone my problems and I'd like to keep it that way so here I sit at work with STEAM coming out of my ears and no one to blame but myself!

Learn from my mistake, don't wait!
psumary,
Don't kick yourself, you had no way of knowing this would happen. Second, I am 4 weeks post op from my TAH/BSO and I am here to tell you that no matter what type of hyst you would have had you would still be facing pretty much the same recovery period either way. Why, because both require internal stitches and healing.
None of this is a walk in the park. Even though I have been luck and had zero pain I still have had to rest (sleep), drink lost of water, and walk as much as possible. Yes, I have had swelly belly but not nearly as much as I anticipated and it took no time at all for my incision to heal.
Give yourself a break, you are human and sometimes we all think if we put things off they will fix themselves.
Vent here anytime, we will always listen.

Learn from my mistake, don't wait!
I know what you mean... I too waited to decide to do this, although I knew I should and the last doctor to examine me, not the one doing the surgery, I'm seeing him tomorrow, said "This is so large you probably will have to have a vertical incision not the nice one tucked away in the bikini line". Not like I've ever worn a bikini, but... I'm well aware of the difference between the two surgeries. Maybe the surgeon I'm seeing tomorrow will have better news for me, but I'm not keeping my fingers crossed. Hang in there, in reading some of the posts on this site, I'm very optimistic about my chances for a quick, easy recovery, no matter what type of surgery I have.

For what its worth to hear me say this......DONT let it get you down until you have all the CONCRETE FACTS. It sounds as if he just did a precurser exam so far. Take a deep breath and wait until he gives you his final findings. Dont forget to ask the question "WHY?" alot. LOL. If you dont like his answers go get a second opinion. A few more weeks probably wont make much difference now.
Of course I am NOT a doctor but I have been doing ALOT of reading thanks to the Internet. If you check out the types of hysters youll be amazed what they can do these days. Dive in to the Information Highway and then ask your Doctor all the questions you can think of.
I feel extremely CONFIDENT that youre not going to be disappointed. >wink<
Just do your homework and relax.

PSUMary~
Donna is right....either surgery is alot of recovery. Granted, an abdominal incision is one more thing to heal up, but those internal stitches are a major recovery ordeal!! Feisty and crosswordqueen are right as well. Read all the posts, and study the "info highway". Either way you go, you're going to have a while to recover, but we'll all be here with you during your recovery time! And by reading the posts, you'll see that the majority of us are doing pretty well.
So, take heart, and do whatever the Doctor thinks is the best option for your case. ( be it this Dr., or any other one, if you decide to go for a second or third opinion). If it is too large to do vaginally, you gotta do what ya gotta do!!
I feel for you, and am glad you gave great advice to the other LIW. But don't get down on yourself!

Learn from my mistake, don't wait!
don't stress, i had an abdominal hysterectomy, and the recovery was not really that bad. Honestly it wasn't! I am 6 weeks post op today and was released to a normal life, although I do have to go back in 2 weeks. I had some "granulation" that was treated today with silver nitrate. Painless, but the first insertion of the speculum since surgery was scary. That also was not a big deal, no more uncomfortable than before surgery.

Learn from my mistake, don't wait!
Same thing for me! My doctor and I "watched" my fibroid situation for a year and a half and then in June, he decided it had grown to the point I was getting ready to have major issues with urinary stuff because of how it was all sitting on my bladder and pressing against ureters, etc. And, of course, by then, my uterus was also too big for vaginal hyst! AND it ws "borderline" as to whether or not he could remover everything with bikini cut as opposed to vertical. (Pathology report after surgery showed that it weighed 800 grams...about TEN times normal size!) I was in a major funk about having abdominal incision and all that because I DO wear bikinis and have always been on the thin side with a very flat tummy. Even tho it was uncomfortable for a while, the abdominal incision was not nearly as bad as I had feared. He was able to do bikini cut (thankfully!) and I was back in a bikini at 2 weeks (not swimming, of course, but enjoying the beach!) and the puffiness and swelly belly at day's end gets better every day. It was WAY less noticeable at about 10 weeks, and the incision is so low that nothing i would wear reveals it! In retrospect, even with the longer recovery of TAH versus TVH, I am not sorry that I waited...at least I knew going into the surgery that it REALLY was necessary. I think that helped me emotionally to deal with everything...even the 7 inch scar! Also, by having the abdominal surgery I had more confidence that my doctor got a really good look at EVERYTHING and had plenty of room to work! So, there's always the silver lining!!! Good luck!

Learn from my mistake, don't wait!
Hi Mary,
I do remember your posts awhile back and I'm sorry you have regretting waiting. Don't blame yourself on this. I put mine off for a year after my dr. mentioned the word hysterectomy to me. I dealt with the heavy bleeding, pain, and finally the following year while on vacation is what got me to really get thinking seriously about it. As far as recovery, I've heard that it's the same with both vaginal and abdominal because the internal work is done but the vag. sisters don't have the outside cut to remind them. I know you don't like hospitals but I hope that when this is all over for you, you feel much better. It's nice for me to not have to deal with bleeding and going through supplies every 20 min. or having to plan around Aunt Flo.
I to had to go for a sonogram before my hysterectomy to determine the size of the uterus.
Which way can I have it done tah or tvh

Hi psumary,
Please don't feel that you made a terrible mistake. You did what was right for you, at that time. You weren't ready to commit to major surgery and the recovery phase at that time. I'm hoping that your doctor will still be able to do your hyst vaginally (if that's what you would prefer) but if not, each of us recovers atg a different rate anyway, and so while most doctors will say 4 to 6 weeks recovery for a TVH and 6 to 8 for an abdominal, there's no way to pre-determine in advance exactly how your recovery will go.
All you can do is to prepare yourself and your family and friends and read and learn as much as possible from your sisters here. We'll all be here for you, whenever you need a or two.
