10 weeks post hysterectomy -- back pain

I went back to work 8 weeks post-op. Since then, I've been having awful back problems--stiffness, pain (up to 8/10) centering in the right half of my back, next to the spine, and around the top of the pelvic girdle. I work a physical-labor job (unloading freight and then stocking it on shelves in a big-box store) and I have never had this kind of pain in my back before. I've had some troubles related to being a bass drummer but that was in my left piriformis (a muscle that runs from your back through your behind). This is very different, and much higher.

Did anyone else have back issues after a large fibroid and then hysterectomy? My fibroid was 14cm (about the size of a 12-14 week pregnancy) and pressing upward from the fundus of my uterus into my intestines and on my bladder.

I will see both my GP and my surgeon this month and will bring it up to them as well, but I'm just wondering if any sisters out there have the same issue.

Re: 10 weeks post-op--back pain

Yep, though I had it earlier in my recovery, and I noticed it when I returned to work - a desk job! I generally pegged it as middle-back pain, not like where I've had it before. I attributed it to not having the core strength as I did before surgery, and my back was compensating. I had a 10cm Fibroid and he had a bunch of 'broid buddies. So I still reclined when I could, changed positions, took breaks, and got really friendly with the heating pad. Lying on the floor on a tennis ball or two, or a foam roller also helped.

If your restrictions have been removed, a simple Pilates program can help you to regain your core strength; you can join a class at your local Y or community centre, borrow a DVD from your local library, or find videos online. Another thing that I've really found to work for my own back pain is to simply take a short break from whatever I'm doing, and do a few simple stretches. Best wishes for your continued recovery!
