just me over planning

So, I wanted to get this all over with before I had to return to work (in elem. school) but that was not in the cards. I now am over planning in my head about missing work. I am "planning" on having a daVinci hyster in Oct. and need to talk to my supervisor soon about being out of work (before she hears it from someone else). My Dr. says recovery will be 1-2 weeks and from what I have read here and what I personally feel is that I really will not want to be going back to work right away. I have more than enough sick time but they do not get a sub for me and my assistant will be picking up double duty while I am out (like I have done for her for 3 surgerys in the past 5 years) so I don't want to be out too long.

I guess my current plan is to stay out for 3 weeks and then go back for 1/2 days (approx.3.5 hours) for a week and then I will have 2 full days before Thanksgiving break (5 day weekend). Does this sound reasonable?? I work with students with special needs but do not do any lifting or heavy work. I can spend a great deal of time sitting in my rolling office chair, broken up by escorting kids to and from my room. I also am moving at some point this month so I will only be driving 2 miles each way to work (I can't wait for the short drive).

OK,
1- Is this a reasonable plan?
2- How long will I need someone staying with me? (I live alone)
3- How do I get over thing about asking for help?

Thanks for any input/feedback.---L

Re: just me over planning

I think it could work but you might need more time, its hard to predict. I live alone and no one stayed with me, nor did I need anyone. Someone brought me groceries. Really if you don't have complications you don't need anyone to stay. But ask for help with meals, shopping, cleaning and laundry if anyone offers to come in. I did fine and you probably will, too.

Re: just me over planning

I think your plan sounds great. And if it doesn't work out that way just listen to your body. I am 2 weeks post da vinici and I feel great. I don't work but I am home taking care of my 7 year old all by myself. I didn't really need alot of help after my surgery. I mostly slept the first couple of days and ate stuff I could heat up or make easily. My hubby was home the first week but I didn't really need him. Hope this helps. And good luck

Re: just me over planning

I am also a teacher. My surgery had to be rushed so here I sit at home in bed while my co-workers started school this week. I applied for 6 weeks, but hope to return after 3 to 4 weeks. I am going to take it day by day.

Just remember that each person is different, so healing time will vary. Do the best you can and make sure you are ready to go back when you do return to work.

Your plan sounds doable to me.

Re: just me over planning

Thanks everyone!

jp4ga- Wow, you started back already, when does your year end? I don't go back until the day after Labor Day but then we don't get done until the end of June. I really wanted to get this done and over with during the summer so I did not have to take time off from work. All my close co-workers yelled at me because I was putting my job before my health and that work should not have even come into the discussion when I was trying to figure out a plan. Well now they are going to have to cover for ME for a change because the MD said wait until Oct. That will give me time to get in to school get everything up and running for a few weeks and then leave. I am an OT and my assistant has a service dog that comes to school each day and sadly the kids are only upset if Winn is out, the don't really care about us.---L

Re: just me over planning

We finish up late May, which is nice to have the not too hot month of June of for summer. I wanted to do mine in summer too, but the doctor wanted to try an uterine ablation first. So I had that done in April (spring break) and did not miss a day of work, since it was noninvasive. We had to wait a few months to be sure that the ablation did not work prior to moving on to the hyst. My school did not get a supply teacher for me, so my job has been divided among 3 other people, I hope it is not a mess when I return.
