Am I too young for a hysterectomy?
Lately, I haven't been feeling my best. Frequent urination, back pain, sometimes I just feel sick to my stoamch and my last cycle was TERRIBLE! My doctor informed me that the fibroid tumor that I have is causing these problems. He gave me two options, either deal with the pain for as long as you can or consider a hysterectomy.
I'm only 32 years old, but I do have three beautiful kids and a stepchild. My doctor explain to me that he would only remove the fibroid and my uterus, which means no more periods and no more children. I've talk to friends and some family, but I feel as though they really don't care being that they aren't faced with this issue.
I've heard so many horror stories about this surgery and I am very nervous and very confused about my decision. Cancer does run in my family and was told that if I didn't remove the fibroid that IT could turn into cancer or get bigger. I was also told that if I have the surgery that just removes them that it could back along with others and increase in size!
I'm 90% sure I don't want any kids, but I keep being told I'm too young for the surgery by other people. Will sex still be the same without my uterus? Is the surgery painful? I'm just..confused. Your answers and opinions are all appreciated

Re: Am I too young for a hysterectomy?
Hi There,
I was 29 when I was faced with this issue. The only difference was the my cervix had spots of pre cancer cells. Like you, cancer runs really high in my family and for me personnally I didn't want to chance it... this is a decision for you and only you to make, you know your body and how everything feels, but don't ever let anyone tell you you are too young for this because age means nothing. I am now 32 and in menopause because both of my ovaries needed to be removed and I heard the too young thing for years.
when I had my hyst three years ago it was done vaginally and I found that i had an easy recovery. I did have some set backs but it really wasn't that bad.
Sex for me had gotten better after the hyst, no more bleeding after sex and i was able to relax and enjoy it rather then laying in a pool of blood.
Remember, everyone is different and what might work for some doesn't always work for someone else.... Have you gotten a second opinion from another doctor??? I would do this before making any major decisions because once its done it can't be reversed....
Good luck to you!!!!

Re: Am I too young for a hysterectomy?
I completely understand. I am 31 years old and in July of 2008 had laproscopic surgery to find the source of my pain. The result was endometriosis and fibroid tumors on the uterus. My Dr. removed the endometrosis and all the adhesions I was back to work in about four days. After the surgery he wanted to start me on a round of hormone therapy - I couldn't do it - I had horrible reactions, constant crying, depression - serious thoughts of sucide. Well of course I had my period and with each one the pain just gets worse. I've had two other opinions and both stated that I would need to have everything removed in order to stop the endo which I do not want to do because I am worried about my hormone levels if my ovaries are removed. My Dr. last month then suggested doing a LAVH and keep the ovaries, but as do more research I am finding that sometimes the ovaries quit working once the uterus is removed. I am at a total loss as to what to do. My LAVH is scheduled for June 18th but now I am considering not doing it at all and just having another lap. to remove what has come back.

Re: Am I too young for a hysterectomy?
I feel for you,I am 34 and just had a TAH/BSO 5 weeks ago today.I heard the same things about being too young but I decided a life in miserable pain was just not worth it.These past 2 weeks I feel great and feel like a new person.I have not felt this good since before my last child(he's 7)I can't tell you about sex part yet but the thought of no bleeding after for couple days is looking great.I started on hormone therapy and it's working great.I even got bigger breasts from hormones(HAHA)
Just hang in there and do what is right for you, there will always be nay sayers in your life.

Re: Am I too young for a hysterectomy?
I really appreciate your comments! To answer Charity, no I have not had a second opinion. My doctor that I have is very reputable and also my mother's doctor, so I pretty much trust his opinion. I'm just really scared and confused. I have a list of questions for my doctor next week. He plans to disucss in depth everything about the surgery. I guess my main concern is the pain, the after results, how long before my ovaries go bad and how will my body change. As you stated, this is my decision and because cancer runs in my family on both sides I need to have this surgery for my health.

Re: Am I too young for a hysterectomy?
What exactly is a TAH/BSO? I'm kinda new to all these medical terms. Why did you have to start hormone therapy? Is that an option after the surgery? The only good thing I can say about having this surgery is no more periods!

Re: Am I too young for a hysterectomy?
TAH is a hysterectomy where your surgery is done through you abdomen.
BSO is where they take your tubes and ovaries.
I had to start hormones because the Doc took my ovaries which produce your estrogen.I did not want to go through surgical menopause.(where you are thrown into menopause due to removal)Doc said I was way too young to go through menopause and I did not want to go through hotflashes, mood swings, etc.

Re: Am I too young for a hysterectomy?
I feel like I was reading MY story when I read yours. I too am 32 with three young boys. I am currently recovering from a LAVH from a week ago. They took everything, but my left ovary. I can already tell a difference and I can't wait until I am fully recovered to COMPLETLY enjoy my life. My advice is to trust yourself and your doctor. As much as everyone, including us hystersisters, try to help, in the end every person is different and needs to make the decision themselves. Take care and you are in my thoughts and prayers.

Dear Bookwrm:
I hope you will seek out a 2nd or 3rd medical opinion. This is major surgery, and you owe it to yourself, no matter what your age.
I hope you are able to find the right answers soon. I am sending huge cyberhugs

Re: Am I too young for a hysterectomy?
Hi Bookworm,
First of all Fibroids are not cancerous. Only 1% of fibroids turn out to be cancerous and if you learn anything on this site it is that A LOT of women have fibroids. so take the cancer scare out of your mind.
Now it will probably get bigger. Mine tripled in size in 2 years. They can grow quite quickly sometimes.
I would also urge you to get a second or third opinion after you talk to your current doctor. Even if he is the most reputable doctor it doesn't mean that he has all the knowledge in the world and might not be up on all the newest treatments. Your second or third opinion might be able to offer you a less invasive option.
There are other options for fibroids besides a hysterectomy UAE, ablation, Myomectomy all of which leave your uterus intact. You can read bout these on this site and get more information with some searching on google
Also there are many types of hysterectomies from open surgeries like a TAH (total abdominal hyst) SAH (suprecervical abdominal hyst where you keep your cervix) to less invasive LSH or davinci robotic surgeries. If you go here https://www.hystersisters.com/vb2/view_opt2.htm
and scroll down you can get a good over view on the different types.
Having a hysterectomy does not mean you have to loose your ovaries. If they are fine you should be able to keep them. don't let anyone tell you you might as well have them taken out because you could get ovarian cancer. That is the "as long as I am in there" syndrome that some doctors have. Try to keep as much healthy parts of your body as possible.
Do your research and have your questions ready. The days for us women to just blindly trust our doctors is gone. Being an informed patient is powerful and leads to better outcomes.
Big cyber hugs.
