Re: Flying ?

Hi YSlce and welcome to the board!!

I really don't know the answer to your question and think you should ask your dr his/her opinion.

I do know that based on how I felt on day 11, I would not have been ready to take a flight.

You'll have lifting restrictions so won't be able to carry luggage. Sitting for a long time, walking through the airport, or standing in lines for a long time may cause discomfort. I had to wear those hospital support hose when I came home from the hosp. to prevent post op blood clots and I'm not sure how a flight might affect possible blood clots.

Hopefully some sisters who have discussed this with their drs or taken flights will come along with some advice. Best wishes to you for a successful surgery and speedy recovery.

Re: Flying ?

Thx. It's a bit of a bummer. I have to get home, but the road is too long and too bumpy, ow the flying seems to be in question too.

Who wants to have me for a while ?

Sorry a DVT is a blood clot that forms in a deep leg vein.

# Immobility which causes blood flow in the veins to be slow. Slow-flowing blood is more likely to clot than normal-flowing blood.

* A surgical operation that lasts more than 30 minutes is the most common cause of a DVT. The legs become still when you are under anaesthetic. Blood flow in the leg veins can become very slow.
* Any illness or injury that causes immobility increases the risk.
* Long journeys by plane, train, etc may cause a slightly increased risk.

Hope this helps?

Re: Flying ?

(((YSlce)))

Be sure to discuss flying with your doctor. DVT is the abbreviation for deep-vein thrombosis which is basically a blood clot. Being on a plane means sitting for a while and since blood is meant to 'flow', sitting on a plane for a prolonged period could cause a blood clot.

I wish you the very best with your upcoming surgery!

Re: Flying ?

I doubt your dr. would approve that. My dr. said not to even ride in a car for 2 weeks except to come to my post op.

Re: Flying ?

If you are having surgery away from home, talk to your doctor ASAP about the best way to get home. I have had surgery away from home and my doctor has specific protocols he has his out of town patients following depending on how they will be traveling home. I was a little over three hours from home so I did travel by car but he required that I spend a few days in the area in a hotel before releasing me to travel home. His office also gave tips for the trip and provided nausea and pain meds. Some of his patients do have a hysterectomy and need to fly home so he has a specific plan for them.

Wishing you all the best!
