Prep day of surgery

The nurse that interviewed me the day of pre-op told me to be there at 11:00 - my surgery is 12:30 (June 30). I have to do all the bowel prep stuff on Sunday with nothing to eat all day - only drink water and do the prep at 2:00 and 5:00 (bet I will be weak). Anyway, they said when I come in on Monday, they will shave my belly and down as far as I can see. Why do they have to do this? Has anyone else had this done? Don't you itch really bad afterwards?

I'm really getting nervous now - especially about Sunday and the prep. Thanks for all your responses and prayers.

I don't have e-mail at home so it will be awhile until I can talk with you again.

Love and God's Blessings to all!

((((Garnett)))))),

You don't say what type hyst you are having. I had a TAH/BSO.

they just shaved 1 inch or so off the top of the pubic hair and

some of my tummy. Was not a big deal. Some people itch more

than others.I didn't itch that bad.

I was still numb...still am in places, may be why I didn't itch that badly.

Best wishes,

Pamcat

Yeah, I also want to know if they shave everything for a LAVH?!?!

I also want to know if they put the catheter in before surgery, or after you're "under"?

Chaz,

The nurse told me they will put the catheter in after they put me to sleep. I don't know if they all do it that way or not. Good luck to you.

I've had two myomectomy's. Both times they shaved only about an inch below and what little bit I had up to my belly button. I was very numb for a long time, it took almost 2 months for it to go away. So, no itching just felt weird.

Both times the cath went in after I was under and you are still pretty numb when they take it out. So just relax and go with it and you won't feel a thing.

I was lucky the last time and went under before I made it out of the pre-op room. I'm hoping for the same thing when I go in for my TAH.

Good luck,
Kathi

I had a TAH-BSO on May 19th. They do the catheter in the OR after you are out. When my surgery had to be switched from a laparoscopic procedure to a laporatomy, they shaved about 2" down. All of this while I was out. When the pubes grow back it will cover most of the scar. The catheter stayed in until the day after surgery, and since I was in bed and not allowed up, it wasn't a problem. I didn't even feel it. Taking it out was quick (2 seconds) and painless. Remember, they lube the cath tube quit a bit when they put it in to avoid tissue damage, so it slides out easily. As far as the itchy, cactus feeling when the pubes grow back? I use hair conditioner there after I wash it. Like the hair on the top of my head, the conditioner keeps the hair there soft and less coarse and prickly. Try it and see if it helps.
