Sooooo tired! And frustrated...
I went back to work this week at 4 weeks post op from TAH, everything taken out. My doctor said I could go back at 2??? Anyway, after a full week of work (high school teacher) I am so worn out but have a lot of catching up to do. My husband, however, wants me to go visit his family with him this weekend, a three hour drive. I really really want to rest, but he thinks I'm being selfish! Did I mention I have a four year old and have had to take her to ballet, preschool, a birthday party, etc.? Oh, and that I'm severely anemic? Should I be this worn out? Sorry for the whining....guess I just needed a vent. I really just want to curl up in bed and cry for a few hours but I don't have time!

Re: Sooooo tired! And frustrated...
I also went back to work at 4 wks post op and will agree...so tired! The good news is that there really is a change at 6 weeks. It's been written about on this site and it happened to me. Until then, when not working at work and at home, you do need your rest. In fact, your body demands it, that's why you are tired. Have you noticed more swelly belly? Many of the sisters get it when their bodies say "too much!", I did too.
Does your hubby know all about your surgery? Have you sat down with him to show him a video of what was done to you? I did with my BF and it was a real enlightening, really made him understand and even more empathetic.
Can you offer hubby a deal- either you go with to the family and be so worn out you won't be very social. Or he takes your little one, gives you the day off, and you have some quality time with him when they get back & the little one is asleep?
And your DR saying you could go back at 2? What the? Is your DR a man? I tried to go back at 3 and fought with my DR, who wouldn't release me until 4, and then only because I insisted. She stood firm but warned me- "you will be tired". As you are experiencing, she was right! SHE.
Good luck. Hope you get some of the rest you need!

Sooooo tired! And frustrated...
I really want to know WHY a doctor cares if you take 4 weeks or 10 weeks to recover. Really, I want to know. I think it's insane to expect ALL woman to recover at the same rate. What does it matter to this moron if you stay home and recover for 6 weeks. My doctor gave me 10 weeks to recover, it was originally 6 but I had post op complications. I am enraged that there seems to be not standards.

Re: Sooooo tired! And frustrated...
I cannot believe the doc said you could go back at 2 weeks!! thats nuts, Actually i think going back at 4 weeks is too early.
I go back this monday, week 6 and thats what my consultant, gp, and nurses said 6-12 weeks.
i work with kids with special needs, but will not be doing any lifting till im over 12 weeks.
You know what? i find that the more your hubby thinks you can do, the more he will expect of you :-(
did you tell him doc said you could have worked at 2 weeks?
And i had anemia, that in itself is exhausting and takes months for iron tablets to work.
I have a 4 1/2 year old too, ballet, swimming, so know how it goes.
some men ( not my hubby though thankfully ) think we are superwomen grrrrr............
Having said that, my hubby has been great, but i know i'm lucky :-)

Re: Sooooo tired! And frustrated...
Monday 9/5/11 will be my 4 week mark since complete abdominal hysto and no way am I ready to go back to work. I am sore and cannot climb subway stairs. I see the doc this coming week, she gave me 6 weeks to heal before returning to work. I hope I am better by 6 weeks.

Yes, you should be that tired! What in the world makes your doctor think 2 weeks is sufficient recovery for an abdominal hysterectomy? That doesn't even happen after a c-section! And teaching takes a lot of energy. I'm sorry your hubby isn't being understanding, because you do need your rest.

Re: Sooooo tired! And frustrated...
Thanks for backing me up, sisters! I actually broke down and called the mother-in-law and she told him to take the kid and let me rest!
He actually was really great the fist two weeks, but since my stinking (male) doctor mentioned the 2 week mark as reasonable for going back to work the hubby thought I should be fine by now! There is NO WAY I could have worked at 2 weeks. I even had to unzip my pants in the car on the way home everyday this week due to swelly belly!!

Re: Sooooo tired! And frustrated...
Wow, I can't imagine going back to work four weeks after abdominal surgery. I'm at 3.5 weeks myself, and it's all I can do to sit up and use my laptop for two hours at a stretch. My doctor told me six to eight weeks off work, and my plan is to go back part-time at six and full-time at eight.
I'm also anemic and I think that's a significant factor in the speed of recovery. What are you doing to treat yours? My doctor prescribed daily IV iron infusions while I was in the hospital and for a week after. Works MUCH faster than iron pills, which can indeed take months.
