Should the cervix stay or go?

I am at a loss for what to decide about my cervix. My mom had her uterus and cervix removed when she was 37. She is now 66 years old. All that I have read about the cervix's role is that it supports the bladder and rectum and has a lot to do with sexual function. I am worried that after a while, that I will miss the cervix. I do not want to mess up a good thing here. My mom says that her sex life is better. See why I am confused? I would appreciate hearing from some of you that had yours removed and how you feel now.

Glad that this site exists. I have read a lot of posts and have learned a great deal. My hysterectomy will be scheduled today, and I will be told the date sometime this afternoon.

I am 47 and suffer from painful periods and heavy bleeding each month.

Should the cervix stay or go?

Hi ruler0405!

A very recent scientific study shows that hysterectomy patients who have their cervix removed are no more likely to experience sexual difficulties or urinary or bowel problems after surgery than women who have only their uterus removed. You can read more about it here:

I had mine removed and I don't miss it a bit. Good luck in making the surgical decisions that are best for you.

Should the cervix stay or go?

The uterus and cervix are actually one unit. I have chosen to have it taken out as a whole to possibly avoid any issues later.
Just my opinion.

Should the cervix stay or go?

Hi Ruler0405,

My Dr. was of a different school. He felt the cervix does help with pelvic support and with sex. Since I had had normal pap smears for years and my cervix was sturdy, my Dr. suggested I think about retaining it. I did..and I am still pleased with the decision.

Here is a Hyster Sisters link that goes over the ~cervix~. Might help you with your research:

Best wishes. Don't worry. You will make the right choice for yourself.

Thanks for your reply. I have decided to get Laproscopically assisted vaginal hyster. (LAVH) the cervix is history. My Mom told me that my great-grandmother had cervical cancer. This made my mind up.
