Is anyone glad they waited to have their hysterectomy?
I was just wondering if anyone was glad they waited to have their hyterectomy. I really don't want to chicken out, but its tempting. Wait for more of the same while hoping for a miraculous cure......

Re: Is anyone glad they waited to have their hysterectomy?
I haven't had a hysterectomy, yet, but had to chuckle over your "miraculous cure" comment. Seems that I have been waiting for that as well and am in the same boat. You put what I am feeling so well, that it very much put it more in perspective for me. I will be having the discussion of my options with my doctor in a little less than two weeks, after school is out for summer as I am a teacher and very crabby right now, and in some ways ready to quit waiting, but also still wishing for one more treatment to try. Never thought of it as waiting for something that probably won't happen.
Not much help for you though. Sorry!! Hope you get your answer and have no questions about it. Hoping I do as well.

I just went and read your introduce yourself post. I'm going to be blunt here. YOU CANNOT CHICKEN OUT! I know your nervous, but please relax and accept your decision. Use this time to prepare for your recovery and make peace with the fact that you need this surgery.A year from now you will be so much healthier and happier.

Re: Is anyone glad they waited to have their hysterectomy?
Hi 1dl,
I think you should hold off to have your surgery or get as much information as possible because I totally regret that I had the surgery, the doctor didnt completely tell me everything.
I almost died from the surgery from bleeding profusely that ER didnt how to control the bleeding.
if you really need it than do it so you want have go every month in pain. Please pray about your decesion, because I look at the Dr. Oz he clearly stated these doctor performs unnecessary hyterectomy on women, they have more complication because the horomones will never be the same.
Good Luck

Re: Is anyone glad they waited to have their hysterectomy?
I think each woman's decision and surgery is her own. I am 4 wks post op and I never felt better. I wish I had done this a long time ago. My situation wasn't getting any better. My fibroids were growing. My bleeding was becoming erratic and intercourse would become painful in certain positions or once I orgasmed. I had a uterine ablation in 2010 due to bleeding out all the time during my period. The ablation curbed that but had I known I was going to get a hysterectomy anyway I would have just done it. When my surgery was over my dr said he was 99% sure without the pathology report being back that there was no cancer. I didn't even know cancer was on the plate until he said that. Nobody really knows whats inside until they get in there. Turns out I had adhesions and scar tissue from previous surgeries as well that was cleaned up while they were in there. although I am still in recovery I can tell already my quality of like is sooooo much better. Ladies this is a personal choice but for me I chose to live my life painfree to the fullest! This is the best decision I have made regarding my health in a long time.......
as far as the miraculous cure, before my surgery I was 15 days late for my period. My thought was "oh good menopause I won't have to do this after all". But the bottom line was there was a tumor inside of me and I wanted it OUT. Didn't matter, I got my period and was quickly reminded why I was doing this. Good luck ladies not everyone has had a bad experience or regrets doing this. I'd be willing to bet that most of the ladies on here are glad they did

Re: Is anyone glad they waited to have their hysterectomy?
I am glad I did NOT wait. I tried supplements, ibuprofen, various birth control pills and the Mirena IUD. My next and last option would've been ablation. I decided enough was enough and that I was tired of being a guinea pig.
Surgery was not fun, but it went well and as planned. The first two weeks were pretty painful for me, but it gradually and predictably got better.
And I am no longer anemic! In fact, I lost 2/3 less blood during my hysterectomy than during a typical first day of my period. (I used to use a Diva cup and measured it in mLs and compared that number to my pathology report.)
You can go see your doctor again to discuss your issues and options. I made several pros and cons lists, but hyster always came out as my best bet. At this point, I know it was right for me, but it was a scary decision to make.
I read your intro thread and it sounds like you've been through a lot already. What will happen if you don't do the hyster? Is there another procedure or treatment that gives you a reasonable fix for your issues?
Read the HysterSisters Pre-Op Checkpoints. There is a checklist in there I found very helpful in my decision. I referred back to it after I had decided but my fears of having surgery made me question my decision. Emotionally, it was very hard for me to decide to do the hyster, but logically, it was my best choice.
What is your best logical choice?

Re: Is anyone glad they waited to have their hysterectomy?
Please remember that you can change your mind right up until they wheel you to the operating room and put that gas mask on your face. You must be 100% certain that this is what you want to do. There's always a chance of complications, either long or short term, and being comfortable with your decision will avoid all the "what if"s that come with complications.
It appears your doctor has been very thorough, but you have to be comfortable with this decision. Because this is elective surgery, you have time on your side. Use this time to explore every single option available to you. I realize that you have tried several options, but until you are comfortable with your decision you may want to wait. A hysterectomy should be done only as a last resort.

Re: Is anyone glad they waited to have their hysterectomy?
There are lots of different opinions regarding hysterectomies for benign conditions, but please don't cause more anxiety in women who are already so nervous about this surgery. I did as another sister did and went through and read 1dl's other posts. She is out of options and she needs this surgery. She has had a failed ablation. The bleeding won't stop. She cannot continue getting blood transfusions monthly.
I regret that I put this surgery off. My original surgery date was December. Had I not chickened out, I would be done with my recovery now instead of just 2 weeks into it.
I just kept hoping there was a way around having a hysterectomy, but after months I realized there was no other way unless I wanted to hurt and be miserable. Waiting for the hardest part. I'm so glad I finally got this surgery out of the way.

Re: Is anyone glad they waited to have their hysterectomy?
Hi 1dl,
I want to commend you on your thoroughness, you have to be your best advocate. Big hugs!
I wish I had done this years ago. I'm 2 weeks post-op now. Every woman I ran into that I told I was having one who said she too had had one told me I'd be feeling so much better and they were right.
I now realize my fibroid tumor was with me for over 20 years, the symptoms just kept getting worse. I went to the gynecologist with pain at intercourse in the late 90s, and he couldn't find anything. But of course he didn't use imaging, it was just manual. His implication was 'it was in my head'.
I also suffered from constipation and lots of gas despite all the remedies. I was tested for allergies, IBS, nothing was positive. Turns out this fibroid was sitting directly on my rectum. My surgeon asked me "How in the world have you been able to poop?" Exactly! It's so wonderful to finally have an explanation. Even with post-op I'm in much better shape in that regard than before.
The increased pain and bleeding with my periods and discomfort in my abdomen I blamed on my age. Turns out I'm not even in peri-menopause yet, it was the fibroid.
Even imaging a month before surgery was misleading. Turns out the tumor was 2x the size the imaging showed it to be. Was it folded on itself? Was part of it hiding in intestines and not showing up? Not sure. My gynecologist who first found the fibroid said, "Let's wait for menopause" until the last check up and it had grown at an enormous rate. Even she admitted later menopause doesn't always shrink fibroids. Sometimes to pee I had to stretch and move around in awkward poses to get the urine flow going, sometimes I couldn't and would have to get out of the toilet, walk around. Why she thought it was ok for me to be experiencing that, I have no idea.
At any rate I feel like I'm re-born, I'm two weeks post surgery, still dealing with the crampiness but if I could, I'd do a jig. I'm so darned happy to be free of the pressure and symptoms!
The best thing you can do is get a surgeon highly recommended by other doctors and nurses, see as many as you can afford before making your decision, make sure they do A LOT of surgery each month of the very kind you're going to have, and that they listen to you, you feel heard. I did these things and my confidence level going in was high. The surgery went great, the recovery is going smooth and like I said, I feel like a million bucks in comparison even while recovering.
Ask a lot of people for recommendations. One of the doctors I interviewed was #2 on my gynecologist's list. I talked to a physical therapist about her and she said "No, absolutely not, she's got a terrible reputation! The stories I could tell!" Turns out my gynecologist was that surgeon's mentor, she had a vested interest in her that may have reduced her objectivity. Luckily #2 was so rude so I stayed away on my own anyway. Other medical professionals get the scoop, be sure and ask for a lot of opinions. Nurses in your GPs office and your GP are great people to start. Warning: just because someone can do the surgery doesn't mean they're the best. Go with people who does your surgery a lot and has a reputation for good results!

Re: Is anyone glad they waited to have their hysterectomy?
I agree with PacificNW. I was lucky in that my GYN was a very respected surgeon in my area. When I got to the hospital the way the nurses "perked" up and ensured I was take care of when they found out who my surgeon was said it all. And they all had nothing but good to say about him.
