Facial flushing--related to LAVH 8 weeks ago??
Hi, all. I'm about 8 weeks post-op, after a total LAVH (including ovary removal) and was already post-menopausal before the surgery. Over the last two weeks or so, I've started having severe facial flushing at least a few times/day: my face turns beet red and hot, along with my neck and upper chest. I don't usually sweat or get hot all over when this is happening, so I don't think it's hot flashes. I had a relatively easy time going through natural menopause, with what I then called "warm flashes" instead of "hot flashes," since they weren't that bad.
The ob/gyn. surgeon who did my hyst. said that even my shriveled ovaries were producing a tiny bit of estrogen, and said that he sometimes puts patients on a small dose of estrogen (e.g., a patch or a low dose) after a hyst. But I was and am reluctant to take estrogen, since I have a very strong family history of breast cancer. Another confusing factor re: the facial flushing is that a couple of doctors have told me in the past that I have rosacea, and a couple of others have said I don't (although I probably really do). But although for years I've been getting very red cheeks when I eat spicy food or drink even half a glass of wine, I never had the redness go down my neck to my upper chest. Could this be a weird version of hot flashes? Have any of you had post-surgical facial flushing like this (without sweats and overall body heat)? I'm not sure whether to follow up with my primary care dr., a dermatologist, or the ob.gyn. TIA for any replies. ravella

I suspect that having your ovaries removed is causing the flushing of your face. Different people experience hot flushes in different ways so it could be that just your face is getting the brunt of it. Hot and spicy food will cause me to have hot flashes but like you before your surgery, they are short and not a bother. You might want to try a small dose of HRT if they really bother you and see if that improves things. If it doesn't, then you know to look at something else.

Ravella, after I started a low dose of estrogen after hysterectomy, my hotflashes became what you describe as warm flashes. My doctor called them amber flashes. They increased as it got closed to the time to change my patch. She increased my HRT dosage, and I only get 2 or 3 a week. I can definitely tolerate that. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the advice, Elsie and Danni. I'm going to contact my ob/gyn surgeon and regular ob/gyn about the problem and see if he or she wants me to try a really low dose of estrogen. Marilyn

They say that flashes (all over heat) and flushes (concentrated heat and redness in face and chest) are different but both can happen after a hysterectomy. My overall body temperature is up and I'd say I get warm flashes like you describe too but no flushes. Like you though, alcohol makes me flush so I might expect it from menopause!
