My surgery was postponed...... Ugh

So I go to the hospital yesterday to have my surgery, all prepped up: IV, in that smexy hospital gown, blood drawn and just waiting to be taken upstairs. Then a nurse comes in and says my potassium is too low and anesthesiology won't touch me so she was going to call my dr to see what he wants to do. Five minutes later she comes in and says my surgery is canceled, I'm going home and need to follow up with my GP for the potassium and reschedule my surgery. So we leave. I have a mini tantrum unpacking my bag at home by throwing things and called and canceled my follow up appt; I wasn't going to reschedule the surgery and go through all that stress of waiting again (I was taking Xanax for the first time in my life), plus I start my last semester of college next week. Then in the afternoon my dr office calls and the girl said he is livid because he was never called and didn't know what happened until he got there to do my surgery and I was already gone. It was the anesthesiologist that sent me home, so I was flat out lied to! My dr would have told them to give me potassium and push me back on the schedule and he would have never sent me home. So now I'm set back up for tomorrow, got a script of potassium to take yesterday and today and have to go in for blood work this afternoon. I told the office girl I want a different anesthesiologist or I may punch him in the face if I'm not already unconscious. Sorry, I just had to rant.

OMG!!! I am so sorry to hear that sweetie!
I know that has to be frustrating especially when you have prepared for everything. Please take a deep breath. Know that you are in good hands. Refocus on things after this shake up. You will be stronger!

OMG - I would be livid!!!! But, please relax, and realize that things happen for a reason. I hope you have a new anesthesiologist tomorrow - maybe that is part of the bigger plan......

Relax, rest, watch a silly movie, do something for you - maybe a nice walk to burn off stress. Best wishes for you and your medical team tomorrow!!

Your surgeon probably has similar feelings - and your surgeon's not going to be unconscious.

In the meantime, if you're allowed solid foods today, then be aware that beans, dark leafy greens, potatoes, squash, yogurt, fish, avocados, mushrooms, and bananas are all rich in potassium.

How terrible! I would be furious if I were on your position. I sure hope you have a different anesthesiologist second time around.

(((jprgrl)))

I am so sorry for all you are going through. I am sure it is very frustrating.

However, let me share something with you. Your surgeon cannot make an anesthesiologist go forward with surgery, so even if your doctor had been called today, the anesthesiologist could have still said, "No." Your life is literally in the hands of the anesthesiologist. They get the final say in whether or not a surgery goes forward. After all, they are responsible for keeping you alive during surgery, so you want them to be confident with your situation!

I hope everything works out for you tomorrow and together your medical team can make the best decisions for you!
