Post LAVH HRT Confusion

I have been on bio-identical HRT since 1998 with no side effects, except good ones, that I knew of. Had hysterectomy on Aug. 21 for uterine cancer. Oncologist said to keep taking same HRT - triestrogen and progesterone. Gyn says to drop progesterone. Some research shows that taking progestins after hysterectomy increases risk of breast cancer. Why would oncologist say to keep taking progestins when I have a history of breast cancer in my family. I am in week 3 of recovery. It is depressing me that my doctors are not more involved in educating me. Anyone have any experience with a similar situation?

Post LAVH HRT Confusion

Hi!

It's confusing when we get conflicting information, isn't it?

You said you're using bio-identical hormones--tri-est and progesterone. Bio-identical progesterone is not the same as synthetic progestin. It's synthetic progestin, not bio-identical progesterone, which has been linked to an increased risk of breast cancer.

I've been using compounded progesterone as a part of my hormone therapy for most of my five-plus post-op years. I do have my annual well woman checkup which includes a mammogram, breast exam, Pap and any bloodwork my doctor feels is needed. So far, so good!

I hope this helps clear up the confusion!
