HI Diane,
It can be pretty hard to keep your cool before heading into surgery -- and if you are dealing with 5 kids, I bet that has its challenging moments at the best of times.

I don't know how old your kids are, or how much you want to be telling them, but maybe if you can sit them down, and depending on what they are able to handle, explain to them a bit about what is going on and that you are unhappy about having surgery. You don't have to tell them you are afraid, - they probably would become frightened too - but by sharing the fact that you feel very stressed about your surgery you might find they help you out in ways you didn't expect.

You might also find that planning how they can help you after surgery will be calming for all of you - if you have a game plan where everyone feels like part of the team, this can have a calming influence too.

You might also like to look at these relaxation ideas (from our Pre-op articles)
https://www.hystersisters.com/vb2/hsa...p?s=&id=114395

I found them helpful when I was a LIW, I hope you do too.

I have also found that if I make a list of things that bother me and try to find out which are the "worst" things or the top priority things, and try to deal with those, it can help... sometimes we have too many thoughts going around in our heads and we can't get a grip on what is really important. By looking at what is troubling us we can sometimes get some perspective and find it easier to manage the "big" stuff, and let the little stuff fall away.

I wish you well for your surgery and your recovery.

Diane,

Your post sounds like it should be mine. I have been really short with people recently. Well actually for the last year since all my problems started. My husband has even talked with me about divorce recently because he can't stand to put up with me. (A friend of his finally straightened him up by saying, "If you think her moodiness is hard on you, what do you think it is like for her?")

My surgery is June 3 and I am getting nervous. I am having a LAVH. I am even so nervous I called recently to find out about donating blood to have available for myself. I was reassured that this was slight overkill unless I had a rare blood type, which I don't.

Just yesterday did I finally tell my kids about me being in the hospital next week. I have a 5 year old dd and a ds 17 months. They are going to be spending a few days with Grandma and Grandpa while I'm in surgery. DH will be taking care of me.

Any hints on calming the pre-op giters? And living HAPPILY with your family the last few days?

I really know what you are talking about. I was terrified at first-I even cancelled the first scheduled one that was May 5th. Then I couldn't get back in until the end of June.

Although I said I wasn't going to tell anyone: now only a few hundred people know-even those that don't know me very well. I just couldn't stop telling people, and talking about it. And I actually found out there are a lot of people out there with this surgery behind them, and they had lots of good things and comforting things and positive things to say.

I think talking about it so much has finally calmed me down. All my fears and worries are out in the open, and I am calm. still worried, still concerned, still have questions, but the BIG worries are gone.

You don't have to be as much of a blabbermouth as me-that has always been my way to release tension. But at least find a few people to share this with-more people want to help and be good listeners than you will ever know.

me too

Hi Diane,

I am also going in on June 14th so will be thinking of you! I am also quite nervous, but had a major op last year which was not nearly as bad as I thought it would be, so here's hoping that this will be the same. Last time was worse emotionally as it was an emergency op for cancer, but there was not so much time to wait and think about it!

We will get through this and all will be fine!

Best of luck,

xxx

TAH, possible ovary removal, don't know yet. (fibroid family within)

Hi diane,

I have my surgery on June 9, 2004. I have a 4 year old, 3 year old, and a 5 month old. My sister is going to come down to help me, but she has to bring her 5 year old daughter with her. I going to ask the doctor, how long can I stay in the hospital, because thats the only way I'm going to get some rest
