I'm newly diagonsed - need radical?

Hi,

I am newly diagnosed with cervical cancer and it is adenocarcinoma. Cone biopsy shows 6.11 mm x 11mm, therefore I think a stage IB? I am searching for others survivors with stage IB, or similar, to tell me about their treatment experience, results, side effects, etc. I am 51, so not worried about having additional children. I am looking for all my treatment options, so your (survivors) experience is critical. My doctor is suggesting a radical and removing everything including some 36 lymph nodes. Are there better options?

Hi LarryCaryn. I'm sorry to hear of your diagnosis I've not been in that boat so I have no input to offer specific to your situation. But I wanted to let you know I read your message and am sending calming thoughts your way.

If you find you don't receive any more specific responses on this forum, try posting on the "Road Less Travelled" board, since that is where you'll find more women who have had/are having these types of problems.

Actually, my recommendation is to post over in Cancer Concerns. A number of the ladies over there have dealt with cervical cancer and its treatment, and it's a wonderful, very supportive community!

If you are trying to preserve fertility, occasionally trachelectomy (removal of the cervix, without the uterus) can be considered. Usually, though, with adenocarcinoma at that stage, doctors will prefer to do the "conservative" thing and remove the uterus, cervix, perhaps upper part of the vagina, and lymph nodes for sampling.

It may also depend upon your cone and whether or not the margins were clean; that certainly will make a difference in treatment. Again, though, check out CC. If you do a search for "adenocarcinoma," choosing to look only in Cancer concerns and showing results as posts, there will be a lot of information for you there!
