Help I Am Losing My Mind!!!

It sounds like all of your symptoms could be from hormonal fluctuations. Even if you keep your ovaries, the stress and trauma of the surgery can put them into "shock" and cause pre-menopausal symptoms, like insomnia, lower libido, fatigue, and so on...

I was taking Estratest HS (Half Strength) before my supra-cervical hysterectomy. I kept my ovaries, but at about 3 I started having night sweats, depression, fatigue, and feeling absolutely blah. My initial surge in libido also dropped away, so I doubled my hormones and went to the full strength (Estratest has estrogen and testosterone), and noticed an almost immediate improvement in all my symptoms.

If you're not taking any hormones, you might want to talk to your doctor about your symptoms and if it could be related.......and if you are, then the dose might need adjusting.

I've heard that some women have the "shocked" ovary syndrome and then recover their normal function, and some women never do regain full ovarian function. It's at least worth checking!

Like my doctor just said to me today at my post-op check-up, "Life is too short to go without hormones". They really do make a difference in quality of life!

Hope you feel better soon!!!

THANK YOU LOCOBARB FOR THAT INFORMATION YOU HAVE REALLY CONFIRMED WHAT I THOUGHT ALL ALONG. BY TAKING THE HORMONES, WILL THAT CAUSE AN ISSUE WITH WEIGHT GAINING, OR BREAST ENLARGEMENT?

Help I Am Losing My Mind!!!

I had Supracervical too! It will be a week tomorrow that I had LSH. My fibroid was the size of a canteloupe and my dr said her arm got so sore scraping that thing out!
I'm only 6 days PO and I feel really good. I took everyone's advice and am taking it REALLY easy and I think that is the secret.
I was up only once last night (3 am) and I think that will get better. I was worried about all the things you are, but I just let it go. (easy to say) I also was looking at my husband last night and licking my lips which also made me happy.
I think the best thing is to give yourself time and try not to worry about much. Your emotions are in every cell of your body so think the best thoughts that you can. Take special care of yourself. I think it will be ok. You may need more healling time since you've had a couple children. I did'nt bear any so my body hasn't been through what your has. I'm 45 with a 27 yr old step daughter.

Let me know if the hormones cause breast enlargment, I might have to put them on my list!

Help I Am Losing My Mind!!!

I think everyone responds to hormones differently, and luckily there are a lot of kinds and doses to choose from! I had no problem with weight gain or breast enlargement (which goes with weight gain), and have had no side effects at all.......just good results!!

You may have to try a couple different combos to find what works best for you.

I had 2 C-Sections before this, but they didn't kick my butt like this did! Rest and patience are definitely required, and I'm naturally very short on both!

Kirish, I hope you continue to feel well, but if you are still taking prescription pain meds that might be helping with sleep. It wasn't until I was about 2 - 3 weeks post-op that insomnia and all the rest started creeping in.

With my hormones back in order I'm licking my lips when I look at my husband now, too, which is a lot more fun!

Speedy recoveries and happy hormones to all!

Help I Am Losing My Mind!!!

(((Ladies))) it's very common for libido to surge in the first few weeks post op, only to drop off around the time we're getting cleared for intercourse.

If that happens, it's important to first remember that for the first six months or more post op, your body is still healing and adjusting to its new hormone levels. This would be the time to start working with your DR to balance your hormones, understanding that the process can take some time.

For example... for my first six months post op, I was on just estrogen (the Vivelle dot patch) in varying dosages. I tried progesterone (cream and compounded capsules) a couple of times but it only made things worse. By six months, I had finally gotten to where I felt I was on the best estrogen dosage for me. However, I was still feeling out of sorts... low energy, fuzzy mind, low libido. I didn't feel "awful", just not myself.

At that point, I saw my internist, who did a ton of blood work, including thyroid, hormones including free and total testosterone, liver function, lipids (cholesterol), minerals etc.. We found that while my total testosterone level was within the normal range, my free testosterone was very low. She prescribed a low dose compounded testosterone cream, applied to the vulva just a tiny bit each night at first. By the third day or so, I found I had renewed energy, could think clearer and felt more like "myself" - still no libido though. By two weeks, however, my libido was back healthier than ever. At that point, I decreased the dosage of the cream to avoid getting symptoms of too much testosterone (facial hair, acne, deepening voice and more). I now use the cream only once a week and still feel great - no issues with libido at all!

If you are past six months post op and feeling balanced on your estrogen, and still having problems with sex drive, you may want to ask your DR to check your serum levels of free and total testosterone. It's a simple blood tests which is covered by most insurance plans. If your DR is not familiar with compounded hormones and not interested in learning, you might want to ask the local compounding pharmacist which DRs in your area prescribe compounded HRT's through them, and make an appointment with one of those DRs.

It's very common for ladies to switch DRs after the initial post op recovery period because often the DR who did the surgery isn't the most well versed in hormones and HRT's... and that's OK, just find one who is -- they are out there.

As (((Barb))) said, everyone responds differently to hormones and HRT's. And weight gain can result from too little estrogen just as often as it can be a side effect of estrogen replacement in some women. Our bodies are in an upheaval after this surgery, and the adjustment can take some time, and some help from the pharmacy now and then.

I hope this helps!
s,
-Linda

Oh, PS... just in case y'all didn't know... on message boards, using all caps in posts is considered YELLING. If you can, you might want to try using upper and lower case... it makes your posts more easy to read by many of us, too
