11 days post hysterectomy: Why does everything taste bad?

Hello Ladies,

I am 11 days post op; 4 days after getting released from the hospital I had a fever and had to go the ER. However, my abdomen was not hurting....my throat, ears, and teeth were killing me. The ER doc said I had strep and prescribed augmentin. I noticed that everything started tasting funny.

I LOVE diet cokes, but they taste HORRIBLE to me now. I figured it was the antibiotic. However, I still felt sick after several days of taking augmentin and went to my PCP who prescribed levoquin (this is my go to drug for sinus infections, etc, so I am used to taking it). Everything still tastes like poop. Is this normal, and will it get better?

Re: Why does everything taste bad?

It's pretty normal for surgery to affect appetite, how things taste, etc. Things you normally love may no longer taste good. For me, my caffeine tolerance suddenly dropped drastically!

This should go away on its own over the next couple/few weeks. In the meantime, considering trying things that you don't normally think much of. You may find something that actually tastes good to you in this particular situation.

Re: Why does everything taste bad?

My tastebuds have been off as well. My surgery was about 5 weeks ago and things are just starting to taste good again. I have had cravings for raw green beans and oranges.....at least the cravings were healthy ones.

Don't know if it's hormonal or the fact that the body is still healing and things just aren't "normal". Your tastebuds will come back though.

Re: 11 days post hysterectomy: Why does everything taste bad?

I am 2 years post hysterectomy and I used to use artificial sweetener in my coffee. Since my surgery I can't stand the taste of sweetener and use sugar now. Strange but true....

I couldn't eat anything before I left the hospital. They almost made me stay longer but my husband ate my lunch and I guess the nurse thought I did lol. It was two weeks before I could choke down anything besides yogurt. My favorite thing at Thanksgiving has always been dressing. I couldn't handle the taste of it this year. I think it's getting better except for stronger flavors. I hope it gets better for you soon.
