Will I ever get off the couch?

I had a TAH/BSO last Wednesday, Aug 2nd. I came home from the castle Friday. Since, I've been on the couch the majority of the time. I have a tummy pillow and a pillow to my left to rest my arm on (I have an armrest on the right side).
Dh is trying to take care of our 7 month old, but I just have to sit and watch. I feel like I'm being lazy. Some people from our church have been bringing us meals and said that I'm not being lazy, just smart.
Well, today I made a mistake, I picked up my daughter while she was on my lap. She is 19 lbs. It was just to reposition her b/c she was hitting my incision. Dh had to go to the store to get her milk. I was only left alone for about 10 minutes, but it was rough. I felt like the weight of the world was on my shoulders.
Also, I think I have a yeast infection. Probably from the antibiotics (I normally take diflucan after an antibiotics), but I have this fear that it's from sitting around all the time. I also have hemarrhoids (sorry if tmi). They hurt like you know what.
I go to the doctor tomorrow morning to have my staples removed. I'm worried he's going to tell me I need to get up more. But, whenever I do, it feels as though my insides are falling out and I can't breathe b/c of the pain. I'm taking 1 vicodin every 4 hours. The pharmacist said I couldn't take 2 b/c I could only take 8 per day. So, I'm down to one.
Any encouraging words? Am I lazy or doing the norm? I am not normally one to sit around on the couch all day and night. This is very rare for me. I have gotten up and wiped down the kitchen counters, I've had a shower every day (including washing hair), put on makeup (for normality), done my hair, and washed off my daughter's highchair. It seems like a lot written down, but considering that's the entire day, it doesn't seem like much.
Help! I'm feeling like such a loser!

Will I ever get off the couch?

Hi klarinetist,

No, you don't sound lazy to me, but you may be being too cautious. Walking around the house, etc., is good for you. Push yourself to move a little more each day. It keeps the blood flowing and keeps the bowels moving. You are not a loser! Just adjusting to a more sedate lifestyle for a little while. And believe it or not, when the staples come out, you'll feel MUCH better. You won't feel like everything is pulling so much and you'll feel like moving more. Not sure where you live, but go outside for short walks too. Fresh air always helps!

I don't think your yeast infection is from not moving around. Most likely it is from the antibiotics. I got an external yeast infection after my TAH also. It showed up in the creases of my legs. Make sure you tell the doctor. Mine put me on external LotriminAF cream and 7 days of Diflucan to knock anything internal/external completely out. It worked like a charm.

All the ladies here will glady answer any questions, so keep reading, keep posting and keep moving!

You might want to call another pharmacy for a second opinion on the vicodin. I take 3 of the 10/325 every 6 hours and have done so for the past 2 years for Lupus and RA pain.

Will I ever get off the couch?

Klari - I agree that you should just make it a goal to get up and walk around the house....that's it. You need rest...real sleep! Keep taking the meals! Trust me. For 2 weeks after I came home from the castle I didn't do much except, eat, sleep, shower, and watch t.v. I didn't have much of an appetite, so I didn't eat much. I did get overly inspired one night on day 10 I think, and walked around the block. The next day I was wiped out! Just try to do some walking around the house - don't push the stroller! Give yourself time and you'll heal faster.

Will I ever get off the couch?

You are definitely not lazy! I don't move very quickly or very far at all. My surgery was the day before yours and I wouldn't want to be caring for a 7 month old. My baby just turned 4 months yesterday and I'm very careful about holding her. I don't lift her unless I'm sitting, but I don't think I could even do that if I had an abdominal cut or if she weighed more than 14 pounds. It is hard to sit and let people do stuff for us, but that is what we must do if we are to recover well.

Will I ever get off the couch?

Hi Klarenetist... Geez.. Give yourself a break.. You just had major surgery... You should be relaxing and staying put. That feeling your having when you get up (of your insides falling) totally normal. You can alway's check with your doc if you have any concerns. You might want to start wearing your binder for the added support, especially at night while your trying to sleep. I only slept in a recliner for 5 wks. It just wasn't comfortable getting out of bed. Keep taking the meals and help whenever you can get it. Someone told me that now it's your turn to finish what the surgeon/dr started. Your med's you should talk to your doc about. Everyone reacts to meds differently and even to a generic form or manufactuer. I went on a different manufactuer's vicodin after surgery from what I was use to for a prior back problem and let me tell you I got very ill. vomiting, dizzy, lightheaded. So ask you dr for the dossage and see what's right for you. You don't want your incision opening and getting an infection. You just need to slow down for now.. Walking around a bit is good for you, especially to get your bm's going. hopefully you aren't having any constipation issues. Bottom line is your body will tell you when you have done too much. Burning, pulling, pain.. Rest alot and drink alot of fluid. You take care of yourself and best of luck!!

Will I ever get off the couch?

I agree with all the sisters-for me I had to get my pain under control before I could even do any walking. Check w/dr. maybe you need something stronger or for breakthrough pain. Warning though-when you feel better from pain management its ony to keep you following the "rules" so your body can heal and taking short walks around your house will help alot..Hugs and prayers for univentful healing!

Will I ever get off the couch?

Don't beat yourself up..... you are just starting to recover! You need time to relax and recover from this surgery. It has taken alot out of you physically and emotionally. My first week I basically got up walked outside to the mailbox and back, out to sit on my porch and to the washroom. I really didn't start moving more til my second week when I wasn't feeling as yucky.

Everyone recovers at their own speed...... I am sure you feel much better soon!

Will I ever get off the couch?

Rest, rest, rest! Listen to your body. Don't under estimate what you body has been through. It took me a while to see improvement but little by little I saw some improvement in myself. I am 8-weeks post-op and still climbing the mountain. Listen to your body and ask for help. Please don't overdue.

Will I ever get off the couch?

As difficult as it may be, you need to rest - just keep thinking about what was done during the surgery. That does not heal overnite, or in the first week or two - so you are doing what you are supposed to - resting.
I was drinking a ton of water, thus visiting the 'ladies' very often. Each time I went, I would do a couple of laps in the house. You need to be moving a bit.
The big thing to remember is not to lift anything heavy - 5 - 10 lbs max for a while.
It is difficult, as we are used to doing so much and you have a baby, as well. Just remember - you only have one chance to heal properly. <------ Someone on here told me that and it is a good motto to be telling ourselves.
We have been there and done that - so if you need help, we are all here for you.
