Had laparoscopy - when does this carbon dioxide gas leave?

I had a lap yesterday and the doc inflated my abdomen with gas for better visualization. that was 9:00 am yesterday and I still have shoulder pain and rib pain, and it's been almost 36 hours. Does any one know when this discomfort will go away? I can not lie down because it's excruciating. I had to sleep in a recliner last night. Thank you in advance.

Had laparoscopy - when does this carbon dioxide gas leave?

Hey Liatrus! I know that my shoulders hurt in the recovery room but after that I didn't hurt. But when I had my lap. 20 years ago, that was another story! I hurt the next day and then that was it. I guess everyone is different. Sorry I can't help you more. I know it must be miserable. It will get better!

Had laparoscopy - when does this carbon dioxide gas leave?

thanks dinordh
I'm hoping this will be gone by tommorrow. We had to cancel a birthday dinner today, because I just felt so bad (today is my 43rd birthday) we are going to attempt to celebrate tommorrow. My neck is so sore, as if I was lying crooked on the operating table. I'm in pretty good shape, jog and speed walk and I didnt think I would have this much muscle pain.

Happy Birthday Liatrus! Tomorrow will be so much better! You sound like you are in great shape! I also thought that I would just be back to myself in no time. It took a little longer than I thought. (everyone is different) But I didn't realize at the time what major surgery this was. Maybe I did but maybe I was in denial! Probably denial!

So you had your surgery the day before your birthday? What a great bday present to yourself. To feel so much better!

Happy Birthday!!!!

hi liatrus,
First of all, Happy Birthday and I hope you get to celebrate it soon! Glad your surgery went well and don't do too much during recovering.
If your pain is too severe to relax, by all means ask your dr if you can take something for it.
Take care! Remember, let yourself be pampered

Had laparoscopy - when does this carbon dioxide gas leave?

I had a laparoscopy procedure done in 1978 (31 yrs. ago) when I was 17 and if I remember correctly it took about a week for all the gas pains to subside. I do remember that the nurses suggested I go have a professional massage to help dissapate the gasses quicker. I feel for you because I know how bad the back and neck pain.

thank you ladies for your replies, now I feel more normal. I was under the impression that the pain would be gone 24 hours later, so when I still had it this afternoon, I had to wonder if something was wrong. after reading your replies, I feel like this is all normal. I am taking pain meds for it, but just figured that I would not need anymore at this time. This was just a diagnostic lap with a d&c and hysteroscopy. Doc says "I have a diseased uterus and it needs to come out". i have an appointment Thurs so I will get the details and biopsy reports.

thanks again for your support
