PMS-do you or don't you?

I'm confused about the whole PMS thing. I've read where some women say you won't have any PMS after you hysterectomy even if you kept your ovaries. I thought if you kept your ovaries you still had all of symtoms of a period, just no bleeding. I would have had my period last week and I had ALL the usual stuff -backache, headache, hunger (you get the idea). I had a LSH on the 23rd. I haven't had my 6 wk yet to ask my doctor this.

PMS-do you or don't you?

I kept both my ovaries and haven't have any PMS symptoms. I was under the impression that since I kept my ovaries I would have some PMS. But you definitely won't here me complaining. I've also only missed one cycle so far, so maybe as the months go on it might change a little. Either way...a little PMS is better than having to deal with the heavy bleeding and all the problems that went with that mess.

PMS-do you or don't you?

Hi girls -
I kept ovaries and was told that they will take time to shut down on their own. They haven't learned that my uterus and cervix moved out last summer!

Yes, I do have PMS pretty much every month since July. Two weeks post op I had the same pain I'd get when ovulating and have regularly since then. I am looking forward to the day when that is over too!!

We all are different, and it may take a while for your ovaries to wake up after surgery, and then to learn how your pms clock will work.

PMS-do you or don't you?

Hi Meno

you're right. if you keep your ovaries, you are still producing hormones just like when you have a period, and that will only cease with natural menopause

- so for me that has meant craving carbs. and a very bad mood for a couple of days.

Apparently some people have more, less or the same symptoms. Sometimes ovaries can go into 'shock'after surgery, and take time or need help to get back to normal.

The whole point of keepoing ovaries is to keep the hormone production natural if possible, so I guess for me a little pms is okay, if it avoids the need for hormone replacement.

Last thing, the backache thing surprises me a bit, just because I thought that was related to the physical build up to a period...have also read that some people's bodies had almost phantom pains while their body is adjusting to the loss of a major organ.

Hope this helps
