Anyone requested a bladder sling??
Is there a specific reason to request this? My surgery is 11/18 and I'm not sure if this is necessary? Thanks.

I waited too long to ask for it.
Hi,
I asked my dr at my pre-op appointment. She said If I wanted that done, this would be a good time to do it. However, she would want to do some tests on my bladder and schedule more time for the surgery (which would mean re-scheduling my surgery). I am geared up to get it over with (tomorrow) so I opted to skip it this time.
I wish I had inquired about it sooner!!! For me (I'm 53) I pee whenever I cough or sneeze, so it would have been nice to get that taken care of. If you think you want it, ask now!
Best wishes, Donna

Call today
I agree to call your dr. today. If you are having any bladder problems you need to bring this up. Lots of times they will have you consult with a urologist to have a specific test done. Often gyn's work with urologists together during surgery so they would know who to refer you to. Sometimes urologist can be booked for a month. I was lucky to get an appointment for two weeks later after I called. Since your surgery is a week away a nurse from your gyn's office may be able to speak directly to the urologist office to see if they can get you in sooner. If any extra repair or work is needed it's best to have it done with the surgery so you only have to go through one anesthesia and one recovery period. Good luck.

Anyone requested a bladder sling??
I had my pre op appt. today and he did some bladder tests right then and there, ended up he said I could benefit from having the bladder swing so I am having that done at the same time.

insurance wouldn't authorize the sling w/o
a test called a urodynamic test to justify my urinary incontinence was severe enough. Silly rule if you ask me since waiting to fix it when it is severe enough for their standards means another surgery. Anyway, I digress. Point is, my insurance put me in a position where I couldn't say "hey, throw in a bladder repair!" just on the basis of my own report of I sneeze, I leak. If I didn't leak enough, they would have made me wait for a repair until I did. STUPID! Gyn can't do the TVT, only a urologist, so arrangements have to be made to have both in the OR.
The urodynamic test measures the bladder's capacity, and electrodes measure the strength of the pubococcal and rectal muscles, which are the muscles we use to emit urine. Warning: it is one embarrassing test if you are the bashful type. First thing you do is come in with a full bladder and pee. Pee is measured. Then a cath is inserted and the bladder is refilled with saline solution while a computer with electrodes measures how the above mentioned muscles are responding. Then you pee with the cath and electrodes in, measurements of force behind the flow are taken. You are also asked to cough to verify that stress causes leakage.
Bladder sling is called TVT or tension-free vaginal taping. Two tiny incisions very low down, just above the level of the clitoris are made and the urethra is wrapped with surgical tape to straighten the sag, reinforce it and put it back in position. Done laproscopically. Patient wears a cath post-op since anesthesia can make the bladder sluggish or spastic. 48 hours is the norm for the cath.
