Incredibly, I did not realize until AFTER the surgery - that Both of these conditions can reoccur on the cervical stump *a low chance but hey, I already made it to the 1% with my injury*, not to mention, did you realize you can still have a period if you have the stump left in with an ovary?
Having a very light period, or spotting, imo, is not a bad thing if you have your ovaries, or one ovary, because that will help you know when you're in your cycle. Because with ovaries we still ovulate and still get a cycle. I think it's a positive thing to have an outward indication of that. Besides, I'm a woman, I never minded a period, I expect one. What I did mind was bleeding to death.

As far as conditions or complications OTHER than just simple fibroids and cysts, like adenomyosis, or endo, or cancer, etc, it's better to remove the cervix out of caution. But if there is no disease, and no pathology of the cervix, and it's healthy tissue, then there's little argument for removing it.

In regards to prolapse, what I've read is that the new thinking is that it does help prevent it, and there are some doctors of patients on this website which recommended they keep the cervix for that reason, and other reasons. I am trying to read up on the issue myself, and wouldn't mind reading the articles you read, as well.

But yes, it's scary isn't it, reading information online? I found a site with medical articles and when you realize how complicated this all is....sheesh.

Re: Ureteral injury after Hyst

certainly something to ponder isn't it? The bottom line is making a "well informed" decision.. but even then, something unforeseen can come out of that!
one of the articles that supports the concern about the cervix was titled HEALTH JOURNALFEBRUARY 23, 2009, 9:52 P.M. ET.The Debate Over Sparing the Cervix in Hysterectomies .
thanks again for sharing ur story!

Re: Ureteral injury after Hyst

I would love to know how all of you who had a ureteral reimplantation are doing now. I had a TLH with both ovaries removed and my cervix left. My doctor burnt my left ureter and so later that day I had a stent put in. Four weeks later that was removed and just 2 days later I was in the hospital with severe pain and unable to urinate for 7 hours. The pain went away but I stayed in the hospital for 3 days for tests. It looked like I had a small leak but they released me and I went for a ct scan 2 weeks later for a follow up. It showed that my ureter was closing so I went in for my reimplantation on April 18th. It went well and I am having my stent removed on Monday. I am very nervous that my ureter will close up again. I know it was an accident but I'm concerned about my future. Would love to know how everyone is doing now and if you had any further complications after your reimplantaion.

Re: Ureteral injury after Hyst

Hi Hockey3,
I had my reimplantation 15 months ago. Shortly after surgery the pain and nausea from the obstruction was gone. I have been feeling good since. It took me 10 -12 months to feel like I returned to my normal self - strength and endurance. I had a recurrence of flank and back pain 4 months after my surgery, but testing was negative for any further problems. The pain resolved. I have another kidney ultrasound in October, and if that is good, my doc says I'm good to go. 2 surgeons did my reimplantation and both said they haven't seen a reimplantation go bad (scar down.) I've been back to work full time for 13 months. I still have difficulty with my bowels, but manage it with Miralax. I too was really worried those first several months after my surgery, but now I'm confident that the whole ordeal is behind me.

Re: Ureteral injury after Hyst

Hi Bettteratlast, Thank-you so much for sharing your story with me. I feel better knowing that you are doing well. I have been so nervous, worrying about every new pain I feel. I'm so scared that it will close up on me. I can't stand the thought of going through that pain again. I have been so depressed that I haven't been able to work out or run for 3 months now and feel so weak but knowing that it took you a year helps me to understand that I should relax and take it slowley. I'm so glad your almost out of the woods! Thank you again for sharing!
