Am I going crazy?
Hi Everyone,
I am a brand new hysterectomy...just 4 days post op...not by choice...but I guess, most of us aren't...anyway...I have been managing the pain well and no outstanding problems, but this morning, out of the blue, woke up crying nonstop??? I am wearing the Vivelle patch...and have been since the day after surgery...so Im wondering if I am totally losing my mind??? From what I have been reading, I understand depression is normal...but does it happen this soon?? And how long does this last? Im not a fan of taking a bunch of meds...Any insight would be appreciated...

Re: Am I going crazy?
Hi DebbieFun,
I'm so sorry to hear that you are going through this. Among the women I know, many have had a similar reaction to hormonal swings even without getting a hysterectomy. So, as miserable as those are, please don't conclude that you are losing your mind.
I'm not a doctor and do believe that if the blues hang on, you should speak to a doctor as soon as possible to help you shake them (also don't assume that pills would necessarily be the recommendation). We all need that kind of care the same way we take care of ourselves in every other way.
In the meantime, I'll try to clarify a few things from my own experience. I'm assuming that you were given the vivelle dot because you would be going through surgical menopause after the hysterectomy, or still going through non-surgical menopause if you're ovaries were left in. If this is your first time on the patch, it takes a while to get the dosage right. You can have an emotional mood swing by getting too much or too little of any hormone, so that can be adjusted.
Just because we all read that depression is normal after an hysterectomy, that doesn't mean forever condemned to depression.
Its normal to get depressed and emotional after any major surgery. It is a form of shock. General anesthesia can itself cause a similar reaction.
You may have had a few days of euphoria (or a least, okay I can handle this) right after the surgery and then crashed a bit with the adrenalin needed to get through it wore off.
As they say on the pain meds bottle, don't operate heavy machinery or make major life decisions under the influence. Please don't decide that you have gone over the edge.
Obviously if you feel that way, please do get help. If someone is staying with you, talk to them, and then talk to a sympathetic doc or therapist as soon as you can.
Hopefully it will turn out to be one more attack of wild hormones and level out soon. Definitely talk to your GYN about the patch dosage.
And know that you are not alone in weepyness! I cried in the supermarket the day before surgery because I wasn't going to be able to go shopping for so long - and that's food shopping!!
My heart is with you!
