My Complicated TAH
I had a Total Abdominal Hysterectomy on November 10th. I thought I would stay just a couple days and be good to go. I wasn't prepared for the complications. Turns out that on my right side, my Dr. had to actually sew my muscle together to keep me closed up. This made the right side of my incision excruciatingly painful. On top of that, I ended up developing a paralytic ileus. I had never heard of this and had no idea what was going on. I just knew that I was in terrible pain from my incision and my belly and that it kept swelling bigger and bigger and getting harder and harder. They kept trying to force me to eat but I just physically could not. I felt like I had eaten a huge meal and the site of food made me sick. Also, my potassium was dangerously low. My couple day stay turned into over a week and a half. I can not even remember most of my time in the hospital. I'm 4 weeks out today and still recovering from the ileus. I've lost 20 pounds and still can't eat too much. It was the absolute worst pain of my life. Having that huge swollen belly on top of my incision was awful. They said my bowels looked they were about to explode. It certainly felt like it. I'm slowly getting better. My incision is much better and if it hadn't been for the complications, I would be further along in recovery. I had the hysterectomy because my uterus was the size of a 12 week pregnancy, heavy painful periods, etc. I also wanted my Essure coils removed because I felt like they have been causing me so much pain and other symptoms. I had adenomyosis and fibroids. My uterus was also attached to my bladder. Has anyone else experienced anything similar?

Re: My Complicated TAH
I had TAH the same day as you. I didn't have the complications you have had, but I am surprised at how long this recovery is taking. I am no where near 100%, although I have been improving. I didn't think I would still be in pain at this point, my incision is still sore. My head is finally clear and I can concentrate again. One step at a time......
I hope you are feeling better soon.
