suggestions for self-sufficient?
Hello.
I will be getting a TAH/BSO soon (date pending biopsy results) for ovarian cyst, fibroids and possible cancer. I had a similar surgery a few years ago when I had several cysts removed so I kinda know what I'm about to face. At the time, my mother was my at-home "nurse". Now, she is to be my nurse again but her health is horrible (emphasema) and I don't want to have to rely on her so much. Do any of you have any suggestions that could help me be more self-sufficient after I leave the castle? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Jewelz

suggestions for self-sufficient?
Hi Jewelz;
I think the best way to be self sufficient is to prepare things before you go to the hospital.
Make and freeze meals to heat. Or buy TV dinners or easy to perpare meals.
Have a TV tray to help with eating before you are ready to sit upright in a kitchen chair.
Have a pillow handy at all times in case you cough or sneeze. Also, a back scratcher!
Have things you like to use everyday in one place. Like a basket next to your couch, bed or favorite chair. In the basket place everything and anything you want!
Use a small cooler to keep a daily supply of snacks and drinks, water is best! Helps cleanse the system.
Have things prepared for your child too. You may do well to ready one room. Put everything where you will be most comfortable for everyone. It is easier then running from room to room. This will also help eliminate clutter that you may try to clean! Leave the cleaning until you feel better!
Best wishes to you!
Sybie

suggestions for self-sufficient?
My mother has cronic pain but she insisted on being my nurse...i did all the things Sybie did and i also kept blankets in the livingroom so they were at close hand....my DH did all the cleaning and i told my mom if she saw anything out of place to... let it go... because DH would be so upset if he thought she though he wasnt doing a good job. (i let HIM know before i told this ) this way the only thing my mom had to do was help me to the bathroom and put prepared food in the oven or the crockpot (we used the crock a ton).

2 things I foud invaluable in my early day alone were a grabber (like those gopher thing on TV) so I could pick up things I had dropped without bending over(oops there goes the remote!), and something stable beside your bed or what ever you will be resting on to help you sit/stand up. We had an old walker from my mom I set it backwards against my bed and wa-la instant bedrail! I wish I had gotten one of those wedge pillows too. Rearranging pillows is sooooo hard.
