hyster recommended due to ovaries not visible
Hi All...
Am 51, have not had my period for 4 months so far...do have hot flashes...mood is MUCH improved however without any PMS going on...
Have had fibroids diagnosed for a few years now...had LOTS of pain a couple of years ago, never too much bleeding, but the symptoms have been very quiet the last year....
Am scheduled to see a "fibroid specialist", but my GYN is recommending a hysterectomy because she could not see my ovaries on ultrasound, CAT scan or MRI (both with contrast)...Two years ago, they were visualized on ultrasound...she says the CAT shows that the masses visualized are likely fibroids....
Am a bit confused by all I've read on the Internet...this seems drastic to me, to have a hysterectomy because my ovaries are not visible....
Anybody else with similar experience/words of wisdom, please?
Thanks so much for any opinions offered!!!

Re: hyster recommended due to ovaries not visible
Honestly? Asymptomatic fibroids can be very dangerous. I know this first hand. With that said, it sounds as though you are going into menopause and no symptoms from the fibroids. Did either test tell the size of the fibroids?
Personally I would get a second and possibly a third opinion. A hysterectomy does sound a little drastic to me and perhaps a little pre mature. Only you and your doctors can make that decision.

Re: hyster recommended due to ovaries not visible
I don't know the sizes as she just told me over the phone and never got a print out of reports from the last 2 ultrasounds I've had...but she did say I had one large one...I know I have multiple fibroids of all types and sizes, intramural, pedunculated, etc.,...the techs are always amazed at my lack of symptoms....I guess the pedunculated one near one of my ovaries I knew about must have grown, and it is a new thing that the other ovary has some kind of fibroid in the way...
and YES, though I had awful symptoms a couple of years ago, it was only for a few months and then became intermittent, but just pain, and no symptoms for over a year....
yes, still waiting for appt with GYN who is a fibroid specialist in Boston (I'm in the burbs as is my regular GYN)...
Thanks for the input...I don't know anyone with a similar situation and it does just seem a drastic solution...my GYN is a young woman though, so I kind of trust her more than I would an older man, just instinctively, right or wrong! HA!

Re: hyster recommended due to ovaries not visible
Honestly, most women should not have a hysterectomy for fibroids. Additionally, removing the uterus because the ovaries are not visible doesn't make sense either. That won't change anything regarding the ovaries. If the ovaries are the problem, then the ovaries are what need addressed, not the uterus.
There can be a number of reasons for the ovaries not to be visible so don't panic. As it sounds like you are headed into menopause, they may be shriveling up to a smaller size. That could also explain why your fibroid symptoms are better--less estrogen so they are shrinking.
I think you are wise to be doing some research, asking questions, and scheduling to see a fibroid specialist before you make any major decisions. And as an FYI, the sex of a gynecologist does not mean they will make the right or best decisions for you. It depends more on their education, training, and experience. My mother's worst gynecologist was a woman!

Re: hyster recommended due to ovaries not visible
thanks so much for the input! it is good to have my initial instinct confirmed that not seeing my ovaries is not reason for major surgery, necessarily!!
I will, of course, consult with at least the one specialist before making any decisions...
I do feel calmer though, thanks to you both....

Re: hyster recommended due to ovaries not visible
Hi,
Just want to add I've had some 'missing parts' that turned out just fine. When I had my tubes tied, the surgery took a lot longer than expected because they had trouble finding my ovaries. They were just very deep! Surprised them because I am thin. A few years ago they could not find my gall bladder with an ultrasound. They asked me if I'd had it removed. When I told them no, they kept searching and were finally able to find it. I guess some people just keep the parts they want to keep hidden from the docs. LOL

Re: hyster recommended due to ovaries not visible
I had a transvaginal ultrasound a couple of years ago and they couldn't find one of my ovaries. They suspect it is because I carry so much bowel. It sounds like you are taking good care of yourself by researching and getting another opinion. Good luck!
Perhaps you should get a copy of your previous reports so that you can see if they are growing or shrinking?

Re: hyster recommended due to ovaries not visible
I hope all my parts continue to be fine! Last week my doctor found I had an enlarged uterus with a mass. She thinks it might be a fibroid or fibroids. My periods stopped 4 years ago, and even tho I had several ultrasounds for ovarian cysts, I have never had a fibroid. I haven't had any spotting or bleeding.
I had a mammogram on Tuesday and that night my doctor called to tell me I had to go back for a magnifying mammogram because of some microcalcifications. Those were diagnosed and checked out years ago. I've never had a call back for them.
Then she tells me my B-12 is very low and I have to start up my calcium injections AGAIN!
I don't have a clue what's happening here.....but the radiology department got me in for both procedures this coming Monday. Since my Mom had breast cancer I have never taken HRT, but my periods didn't stop until I was 57 so I had my own estrogen until then.
Maybe these findings will 'go missing' ! I can only hope!

When it rains, it pours, eh?
I so hope your mass checks out to be fibroids! that's encouraging that the doc thinks so right off the bat...
