Yikes! April Fool's Day Surgery and question
Wow, I have waited so long to finally be well enough to get my surgery date. Today I found out that it will be on April Fool's Day! Yikes. Ha, ha. I told the surgery coordinator that this means I can't eat on Easter and I will have to drink that gallon of "poison" for the bowel prep on Easter! She said that April 1st was the day that all three surgeon's could be in on the surgery and where they could get the operating room reserved for the two and a half hours that my doctor requested. I was quite surprised that they would only need the operating room for two and a half hours for a hyst/BSO with a bowel resection and a urologist to do a procedure. I hope they won't be rushing through my surgery. Now isn't that an irrational thought! I wonder how long a hysterectomy usually takes? Anyone know how long their surgery took?
Thanks for listening, and I really am glad that I finally have a surgery date, even if it is on April Fool's Day

Yikes! April Fool's Day Surgery and question
Jerianne,
I'm so glad that you finally know your surgery date! My surgery lasted 1 hour and 20 minutes. I had a TAH/BSO. But.............I didn't have to have bowel resection. Yours is obviously going to be longer because of this additional procedure. I have found that the length of surgery varies quite a bit. It all boils down to what needs to be done and everyone is so different. Best wishes to you.

Yikes! April Fool's Day Surgery and question
April Fool's Day, huh? You have to think of something good to do to your doctor...maybe a note on your tummy or something...
Too bad about Easter dinner...maybe you can have the meal a day early!
My surgery ran into some complications due to massive adhesions which gunked everything up very badly inside...it took three hours (TAH/BSO). Each person and situation is different, so I don't think you can make a generalization about length. The good thing is, that for you, it won't take but a second. You close your eyes for a moment, and when you open them again a second later, it will be over. We get to snooze through the hard part!!!
Good luck and have fun with your visit from the HysterBunny!!!! (sorry )

Yikes! April Fool's Day Surgery and question
Thanks for the good laugh, I needed that (visit from the hysterbunny) A note on my belly, hmmmm, any ideas on what to write? Why not have some fun with it
I was concerned that if my surgery looked like it may take more then two and a half hours if they might rush through and not do as good a job. Where's my trust? I'm working on that I will ask the doctor during pre-op what they do in such a situation. Do they just make the next patient who is due in that surgery room wait, or what?
The first doctor who I went to for a colon resection opinion said that the surgery would last longer then what has been reserved for me in the operating room with the doctor that I did choose. However, I imagine that doctors probably know how long it takes for them personally, on average, to do a surgery. The time it takes to do a surgery most likely varies with each individual doctor in the same way that it does with each individual patient.
Thanks for the replies, I have the "first day that I know my surgery date" jitters. Ha, ha.

SSSSooo normal.
Don't you worry about the time they have reserved. That's SO not your problem...this isn't a hotel. You don't pay extra if you go over your allotted time.
Just concentrate on getting yourself and your home ready and leave the "reservations" to the travel agents.

Yikes! April Fool's Day Surgery and question
I'm scheduled for a TAH on the 21st of this month. My DR told me it would take about 1 1/2 hours. I thought it would take longer but glad to know it's only that long. He said of course it could take longer if there was more stuff wrong than what is showing up. I'm not any extra's done so maybe just a little over an hour will be fine for me. I have a question though. How long do you stay in recovery and is your husband able to come in and visit with you while in recovery?

Yikes! April Fool's Day Surgery and question
From my own experiences with the recovery room they usually will allow the family member in there once the patient is "awake" and stable. My last surgery it was my husband with the nurse telling me, "It's time to wake up." I think time in the recovery room varies from person to person, they probably have some protocol they must meet as far as blood pressure and vitals. Then it could depend on if your room is ready as was the case with a family member of mine recently. That is a good question though and a good one for the pre-op visist. I know that they do allow husbands in the recovery room, but you might want to find out the rules for your particular hospital. Best wishes and prayers for your upcoming surgery, Tammy.

Yikes! April Fool's Day Surgery and question
Hi Jerrianne - Even though I am not an OR nurse, I however have had many, many post-op pt's on my units. I also have had a TAH/BSO myself last Aug. Hopefully I can answer one of your questions with accuracy. My doc told me, and in my experience, a straight forward TAH takes about 1- 1+1/2 hrs. Then about 1-2 hrs in recovery. Surgery time depends on many things. First, if the doc's start on time! Then, what they find when they get into your belly. You didn't mention if you had endo or not, that may make it take a little longer, then there is the urologiest, what is he doing? A sling? Just a cath and stents? Try to relax & not worry too much about the actual proceedure. They will finish within a reasonable amount of time. Tell who ever goes with you the length of time you expect to be in surgery, then add 1 hour for good measure, then RR time. That is a good indicator. If the surgery goes much longer than the extra hour you allowed the hosp. should have someone like a Patient Care Coordinator, or Surgery coordinator that should come out & tell your fam. what's going on and reassure them that you are fine. On the day of my surgey, wouldn't you know it, that person was out sick, & no one came out to tell my DH anything, that I was in RR and simply waiting for an available bed!! Oh, well, all worked out fine & I got a private room (of course I work there, lol, so they had better). Best of luck to you, and try to relax. Just think, it's almost over! Melissa - Lissesred66

Yikes! April Fool's Day Surgery and question
Hi Jerianne!
I used to work Labor & Delivery and we did all our women's surgeries there too. This time limit sounds about normal for what you're having done. My LAVH-salpingctomy took about 2 hours. This kind takes a wee bit longer than an ab surg since it smaller spaces to work with.
Melissa's right, it does depend on the dr starting on time and at most hospitals someone does come out to let the family know how the surgery went. Lots of times, the dr him/herself will come out afterwards & talk to the family. And if more time is needed during surgery than estimated, they don't just "put you on hold" because your time reserved is up or anything.
I had my surgery at a different hospital than where I worked and found a little difference between the two with the recovery room. At the one I worked, we did bring in the family when surgery was over and the patient was stable and awake. At the one where I had my surgery, they did the op on a different floor than L&D and didn't allow anyone in the RR to visit. However, because I ended up in the RR for many hours longer than I was supposed to (because my reserved bed was given away & I had to wait on another one), my nurse snuck in my dh after her supervisor left...shhh.
Feel free to ask your dr any questions about how the hospital where you will be having your hyst goes about all of these things.
Another idea for LIWs, something I did for my dh since he was going to be spending all that time waiting on me in surgery & recovery was fix ahead a goody bag for him and took it to the castle with us. I filled one of my canvas totes (one not feminine looking ) with things to keep him occupied like crossword books, his favorite magazine, snacks, and quarters for the drink machine or newspaper. My mother & brother showed up and kept him company too.

Yikes! April Fool's Day Surgery and question
Great advise ladies! Thanks. Yes, I have endometriosis. I have a mass of it on my colon so will have a bowel resection with the hyst/BSO, that is why I thought I'd need more then the two and a half hours that were reserved for me in the OR. The urolgist is looking for bladder endo, but she will mainly do a hydrodistention of my bladder to help with my intersitual cystitis. She said that they stretch your bladder to twice it's size, and this brings relief. I guess that doesn't take much time. Thanks for all the support
